06 Ford 6.0 exhaust

Has anyone had a problem or noticed their 06 Ford 6.0's producing sooting on the rear fender? We are noticing some sooting. Truck runs fine solo or under load. I don't see a lot of sooting other F350's . I friend of mine thought I might running too rich. I checked with Ford for any updates but none were shown. I am getting about 15 mph solo and 8-9 towing. We are equipped the Tow Boss option which provides for a 4.3 rear end. Ford says some sooting is normal but I am not so sure. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

John,
A friend of mine has a truck like yours and he gets some sooting. He says he isn't worried about it.

wa4bmg...Those numbers do not sound right for your 6.0. I have the 05 V-10 Same set up 4:30 rear end.We are now doing in the 10's towing and in the 13's solo..Your numbers are low for a diesel.

I tend to agree with you. I will be taking it to Ford later this week and get it checked out. What do you think I should get for milage with the Diesel/Towboss? Also where did you work with the FAA. I was a controller in the Navy 1966-1970.
Thanks-John

Hi John,

My 06 350 Diesel does not have this problem, and my truck is white! First, I have little to no black smoke under normal conditions. When pulling, if I push it hard, say up an onramp, it generates a fair amount. With the introduction of ULSD, the black smoke seems to be just about eliminated. When in traveling to/from FL from VT last week, I noticed more black smoke when using LSD as most stations between NJ and FL had not yet switched. VT has been all ULSD since last summer.

I assume you have DRWs. I wonder if the body shape or exhaust pipe location allows for more soot to accumulate on the body panels of the DRW? I have the SRW, short bed.

I would agree with Rich, your mileage seems low. Over 30K miles, I average 16-18MPG when not towing, highest in the summer, and 12-14 towing, highest on flat lands in the central/south US, lowest in the hills (as low as 10 when pulling in mountians regions). Your low gear ratio may account for lower mileage when towing?

Tim

tcorbitt's MPG numbers sound are more in line, I would think. We were told that the difference between the 4:10 and the 4:30 is about 1 maybe 2 MPG.We travel with a member of our local group who has the same truck in the diesel and pulling a SOB the same as the 3400. Pulling the same roads, same weight, same conditions he will consistently average 2mpg better than me towing.. Not towing is no contest.. The Diesel shines in that area.

I haven't noticed any sooting on mine. I get 12.5 solo and about 10 -10.5 towing. I only have 14,000 miles on it hopefully it will get better.

Hummm. I have the 05 Ford V-10 same set up as Old GI and we tow the same camper. We are just short of 14K miles and get virtually the same MPG as the Diesel..Maybe it is the region we tow in ?? Right now, as we speak, In town driving here in Apache Junction, Az and my on board PC MPG is reading 11.4MPG.. We are trying real hard to justify the 6.4 diesel and it appears that MPG will not be on that list. (as I have said many times anyhow MPG is NOT the primary reason I would buy a diesel)

John, 77K miles on ours and I don't see any sooting on the body at all and never have. Maybe the suggestion about being a dualie has some merit? Your mileage seems low. Mine is closer to Tim's but my towing mileage is about 1 mpg lower than his. But my truck has the 3.73 rear gears, not the 4.30.

Rich, my '99 V10 got far worse mileage than you are getting. With those numbers you might consider hanging onto it! I got 11 in town, solo, 13 on the highway, and averaged about 8 towing, if I babied it. In mountains or wind it would drop to 5 or 6 mpg towing. Flatlands with a tailwind might see close to 9.5 or so.
