Question on propane storage

I'm building a rack for my truck to hold my generators, gas cans, tripod jack etc similar to what Tom S. has shown us, but customized for us. I have room to store a 30# propane tank on it's side, but I have a general bad feeling about doing it even though I can't come up with a good reason not to. Could it be against the law some places? Fork lifts carry theirs on their side (I realize the tanks are built for that, but I won't be trying to draw from it on it's side). The valve has the handle as a protector and I can strap it down and block it in so it can't move and even provide a board for the handle to rest against to further protect it. Is this a bad idea?

My understanding is that you want the pressure relief for the tank exposed to vapor only. Being that it is located in the valve at the top, tanks should be stored standing up.
If the relief valve lets loose you want vapor released rather than a high pressure liquid. Makes for a much more severe danger.

Thanks, that site says it all. I instinctively knew it was a bad idea, just couldn't come up with why. Back to the drawing boards.

Bad things can happen if the relief valve freezes up....I've seen some pictures of what can happen.

I'm wondering about the 30# motor home cylinders though. They are designed to lay on their side.
