ForumCo is coming to Alaska !

I'm only mentioning it here because I've noticed that lots of you have either been there or plan to be there this fall.

I'll be there from August 15th to September 7th on a holiday / photographic expedition with three friends.

This is our itinerary - http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?k...i63yWXZwjvCHTg

If I see an RV with MOC-???? on it is it considered ok to say hello ?

Any thoughts on the intinerary or do any of you want to meet up if you in the same area as me ?

One of the guys & his girlfriend is big into geocaching and I know there are a few here. His geocaching username is MadraRua. I just registered today as ForumCo (though I've been to about 50 caches with him already).

You can see some of our photos here

Forumco Support, It would be so nice to be able to be there to meet up with you but at this time Alaska is way to far for me. I truly hope that you have a wonderful trip and meet up with some of our members that are in Alaska at that time..

ForumCo Support,

Even if you don't see a MOC sign on a Montana it would be OK to go up and say "Hello". Many MOCers do not advertise but are still very friendly. If they happen to be a MOCer then they will be very excited to meet you.

Have a great trip. BTW there were some great pictures!

We'll be in Seward staying at the Moby Dick Hostel from the 16-18 August - http://www.mobydickhostel.com

We haven't booked any excursions there yet. Can you recommend some maybe ?

Anything I should know about driving in Alaska (compared to Europe) ? Any special rules ? I heard that if you are leading 5 vehicles you must pull over and let them pass. Is this true ?

Yes, if you are the first vehicle and have a line of 5 or more behind you, pull over. Otherwise, the State Troopers will pull you over. It is very true! Also, don't know if you know this or not, so I'll tell you. When you see an orange sign warning you of a bump, slow down. We have big bumps. Also, sometimes they don't warn you with a sign, they just put a small orange flag on the side of the road (and I mean small and low to the ground). Slow down, there's a bump. And we drive on the right hand side!!!!!

If you want to do a sight seeing cruise I highly recommend, Kenai Fjords and having dinner at Fox Island. http://www.kenaifjords.com/ They do an excellent, excellent job.

If you want to go on a fishing cruise, my neighbor is a captain at Puffin Charters. Ask for Captain Rockey's boat. http://www.puffincharters.com/

And right now, the silver salmon derby is happening. Buy a fishing license (you can get it at the grocery store and there's only one in town) and go fishing off the bank if you don't want to take a boat. You could win $50,000 if you hook the right salmon. Of course, I've already laid claim to it, I just haven't caught it yet! http://www.sewardak.org/news-events/...almonderby.htm

You must see the SeaLife Aquarium. You will be staying on the 3rd street. Head out of the hostel, go south (left) and you'll deadend at the Sealife Center. Great place. Bernie's office is right across the street too.

Please be sure to let us know when you arrive and we'll get together. If you have any questions (restaurants, etc.) please ask. We'll be glad to help anyway we can.

Icehouse,

It is always great to have a local give you directions and suggestions. On the issue of 5 or more vehicles and the necessity of pulling over to allow them to pass. This is an issue ONLY if you are not able to go the speed limit isn't it? I know that is the way it is in California. If going the speed limit then the "line" can be as long as it wants to be can't it?

Sure wish we were able to be up in Alaska. Anytime would be great but with ForumCo Support being there it would be extra special! Icehouse I'm sure you will represent us stateside MOCers very well, so thank you.

Well, Hamrad, I have seen the troopers pull folks over if they have a line behind them whether or not they are going the speed limit or speeding. The Seward Highway from Anchorage south to Seward is a mostly 2 lane, very windy road and one of the deadliest in Alaska, if not the USA. 1/2 of the trip to Seward follows the ocean (Turnagain Arm) at the base of the mountains with a few passing lanes, but many pulloffs to let traffic pass. There are lots of rock slides too. Then once you get around the Arm, you start down the Kenai Peninsula and up into the many mountain passes. There are several passing lanes, but still many pullovers. It's a beautiful drive - you'll want to pull over to take photos anyway. I sure hope it's sunny when they come down. It's rarely sunny here. Like now, it's been raining for days and days and days. Oh well, I'm warm and dry!

Thanks Icehouse. We've booked the Captains Choice Tour - http://www.kenaifjords.com/551.cfm

Thanks for the heads up on the road from Anchorage to Seward. As far as I'm aware we will be driving that road on the 16th all going to plan.

We plan to arrive in Seward sometime on the 16th after flying to Anchorage. We should be in Seward for three nights/4 days. How will me meet up ? I can PM you my cell number but I'm not sure it will work. Maybe if we arranged to meet at a restaurant or if you feel comfortable PM-ing me your number I can call you when we get to Seward.
