staples popping up

Well, now that our monty is 2 yrs old plus some, I noticed 9 staples have worked their way up in three different places near the sides of the roof. The highest were about 1/2 inch up. I could push all of them back down very very easy...so it is obvious that they are in no way securing the radius edges down to the rest of the roof. Staples have no place in securing the roof sheathing...in my opinion. And...wouldn't it be nice if the radius edges were bonded. Given that we sit in place for 6 months in florida before towing north for 5 months...you can't say that this is travel related. John

It's been a commonly recorded problem. I'd call Keystone customer service and at least get a claim filed. I believe the roof warranty is longer than the rest, not sure about bad workmanship in regard to the roof warrantee.

Yes, and Keystone is wanting to build High End Rigs while using LOW END constructions methods.

Sorry guy's, Keystone has never helped me on several calls to Customer Service/NOT.

Maybe if I had bought a rig made in Kansas where you can get the owner on the phone, but for almost 30-40% more than what I spent.

You want a King Ranch, but the budget gets you Chevy.

Jim

I was disappointed when I found 3 or 4 staples starting to come up at about 6 months, however the more I read about others having the problem I am probably lucky I caught it before the end of my factory warranty. I have already contacted Customer Service about it and I have an appointment at my selling dealer in December. Guess I will see what they do about it then.

It just seems to me that it would be more cost effective to start using screws so they don't have to pay for these types of repairs. I realize they probably shoot the roof staples with air but there are also tools available to put screws in without even bending over. Just can't see where labor/material costs would be that much more.

My bet is that if you do not have a leak with in the 1 year warranty, Keystone will deny any claim. A staple is not a problem, just a problem waiting to happen.

Keystone will not fix a problem waiting to happen.

A example would be my spring hangers that are outside the specs of Dexter axle. Keystone said it was not a issue that would be covered. The spring hangers are almost 1/4" wider than what Dexter requires for it's 1 7/8" spring that Keystone used on my trailer.

This look right to you?

Not good. Believe the frames are delivered to keystone with axles installed? Even so, they are the prime and should fix.

Mike, I sent about 20 pics to Keystone, had it to a frame, axle shop for their opinion. Lippert provides the spring hangers and their specs are almost 1/4" wider than the Dexter specs.

I called Lippert for info, all I got from them was their specs, When I mentioned their specs were outside of Dexter specs they referred me back to Keystone.

Thus Customer Service/NOT.

On our long 20,000 km trip this summer, I took a tour of Keystone's Montana assembly plant. I think they have about 10-12 "stations" with the first station being where they attach the wheels and axels to the trailer frame. They DO NOT receive them already assembled.

Having toured the factory, I can see why the workmanship is so poor. They just want to get the units done and out of their shop. They put out about 9 per shift - from start to finish. There is no way they can offer decent workmanship at that rate.

Having been at the National Rally several times and having been on as many factory tours, I could be wrong but I believe that the frames come from Lippert with the axels and wheels already attached.

Also having toured the plant a number of times that's the way I saw it also. Frame entered the shop with axles on it, Keystone could be assembling them in another shop, however. Wayne if you only saw 9 per day you must have been there during the height of the recession. The numbers they gave me all three times I was there were 18 rigs a day and higher.

Frames may enter with axles on but they soon come off to make room for work on the underside, tanks, plumbing, etc.

Now back to the original topic

Good luck with the staple issue. Keystone took care of ours, but it was still under factory warranty. As others have stated, it is a very common issue. I've wondered myself, why they don't use screws instead.

Keystone denied my warranty claim on our 2012. They acknowledged it's a known issue but said they will repair if the staples come through the fabric. Dealer will repair for $1600.00 all labor. I'm watching closely for that first staple to penetrate the fabric.

hello, we got our new 2008 keystone Everest in june of 2007, 2 months later 6 stapels pushing up, fixed under warrenty. now January 2014 pick up our new 2014 3625re Montana, first trip was june, 2nd trip july and 7 staples pushing up , fixed under warrenty. going to cover trailer last week of October, there it is again, 6 more stapels pushing up.
it is in the shop right now and again fixed under warrenty . you would think that with all the complaints keystone get about this problem and 8 years later that they would change the way they do things. I think if they did it different, it would slow the line down and they couldnt make 9 units a day. sad really sad.
call keystone and get a REP , tell them about all the complaints on the web site, with a little luck you will get the right REP and they will fix it. good luck

What's even funnier are the issues with the front cap on Keystone products over the last ten years. First it was cracking of the front caps when they first came out, a few years later it was the front decal failing and now the paint they use on the caps is fading.

Something as simple as making a decent long lasting cap they can't get right, if it wasn't so sad it would be funny.

Did they replace the bad staples with Stainless Steel Screws?

Where are staples that come up on the roof? I have not been on the top of mine, since I do not like high places.

I have it washed every winter while in the RGV. Need to get the wash guy to look for staples and need to tell him where to look.

Thanks Jim

I don't know about other Montana owners with staples coming up from the roof cap but mine are at the rear portion of the trailer on both sides about 4-5 inches from the edge. They start at the rear corners up about 8 feet forward. All you have to do is just climb up the rear ladder enough to see the roof and look along the edges. If you have staples working up against the fabric they are very easy to see.
I'm very concerned about my staple issue as I was told by a dealer at the RV show I went to recently that it will definately affect the resale value if not repaired.
