Awning separating

My material in our awning is separating in spots at the top. Like it is peeling, but not all the way through. How long do they normally last?

What we have been hearing is 3 to 5 years, depending on useage and intensity of sun where you stay.

I wonder what would happen if you waxed the top of the awning once a year with car wax? Would they last longer?

If you are talking about the patio awning, I've not heard of problems with them separating although if they're deployed most of the time the sun probably does damage them and separation might result. Slide toppers, on the other hand, seem to last 3 to 5 years, in our experience.
