Just looked at it. They talk of the 2009 Hickory but I believe the Pix is a 2010 Hickory. I could be wrong. I want a new 3400 but my wife wants a motorhome. Time will tell.

Tom,

I hope you enjoy your new MOTORHOME!

The Devil made me do that. I just couldn't resist. We're thinking of the new 3400 too. They sure are nice.

When you just camp occasionally it is hard to justify the expense of a new one but our camper is 10 years old with a lot of repairs. I am looking for Motorhomes we can afford but eyes keep searching for 3400's. I hate to order and buy without seeing the unit. Two forum members sent their PID checklist to me.

In the meantime I am going to put up a 41x20 carport to house the new Monty or Motorhome. Should get the carport within a month.

The smart thing to do is get the Monty but I am not too smart some time. My Monty is cheap to maintain.

We bought our Monty used which left us with no warranty so the next Monty will be new.

The wife and I were also looking at trading 'up' to a motorhome -- she liked the fact that everything was right there; easier to set up with the hydraulic leveling systems; 6 or 8KW generator for electric even when dry camping while enroute -- a lot of things that make traveling nice. Then we starting looking at all the other things - the biggest being that you have to tow another vehicle with you because you don't want to tear down 'camp' every time you want to go sight-seeing; a lot of places are too small for a Class A (which is what we were looking at at the time) so, again, the need for a 2nd vehicle; and then maintenance cost -- not only on the 2nd vehicle but also on the Class A itself (LOF on a diesel pusher costs a bunch more than my Dodge 3500 DRW I discovered!).

It is easy enough to pull over at a rest stop / parking lot and use the facilities in the 5th wheel, have a sandwich, take a nap, whatever.... and according to some very basic number crunching, a lot cheaper in the long run.

But, they do make some pretty Motorhomes that momma sure liked!!

It is a big change to go the motorhome route. More expense for one. I am a firm 12mpg on a trip versus 5-8 for the motorhome. You have to buy the blue ox and braking buddy or a trailer. I have seen guys fool with these trailers for hours to fasten the toad.

You do have the same GVWR and GCWR problems to deal with. A lot of the new diesels only have a 4000 lb hitch so you might have to trade cars. I looked at some new HR's with factory warranty.....Wrong. HR/Monaco will not honor the warranty on any vehicle that doesn't have the new Navistar Vin numbers. So this rules out most the discounted 2008s on the lot. Dealers will advertise Factory warrantys. Navistar is sort of upfront about this.

It would be real dumb to pass up a Montana for an MH but I'm old and can claim brain damage. But.....there is something I like with them.

Thanks Steve. We are getting Monty ready for trade but still hoping for a reprieve. We can only afford a used one but we can afford a new Montana. This is not a done deal by a longshot. Time will tell

Tom -
We had the 3400 and loved it. Great floor plan. Before we bought our Montana, we talked to a salesman about which was better - MH or 5ver. He told us that if you tailgate and stay one night at a time, definitely MH. If you go places and stay three or four days at a time, look into the 5ver. That advice worked for us. It won't for everyone. Good luck on your decision.

There is no doubt that the 5th is the way to go if your retired on limited income. The MH requires far more maintenance.

But there are definate advantages to a MH if you don't consider the cost upfront and maintenance. There is a convience advantage. Pull in and level and your done. I am going to hate pulling that toad.
