PDI questions

I am thinking about purchasing a new Mountaineer.(2013 year tho)
I assume the dealer won't let you do a PDI until you sign a contract. So if you find something, aren't you sort of at their mercy to fix it?
Also, I want to write into the contract that any major issues must be fixed within 2 weeks since I want to head out for 2 months (including the Rally in Goshen). Think they will go for this?
On a side note, are the Mountaineers built in Goshen also??

A respectable and competent dealer should have no problem with you doing the PDI before signing the bottom line. I would go a step further and say that any issues must be corrected before you take delivery of the rig and provide payment.

X2 what Bingo said. When we purchased our last one we signed the contract, only putting a deposit down. They then had about a week to install options and make their adjustments from PDI. When we arrived to take delivery we settled the paperwork and camped with them for 2 days. During that time we found a couple of other things they had to correct/adjust. I would suspect, depending on dealer, once you leave the lot any problems would be a warranty issue.

Bingo is right. We would. The difficult part of putting time constraints on the dealer is that Keystone requires prior approval before making some repairs. If the dealer has good warranty Ser people, they will be helpful in giving approximate time for repairs. You will see them take pictures of your problems. Pictures are worth a thousand words at Keystone.

Keystone and many of their dealers are also good to folks on the road. Both of our warranty issues came up on the road and Keystone Customer Service took care of us. In one case they directed us to a local dealer and had us in and out in one day, in the other instance there wasn't a local dealer and they authorized a local repairman to do the work and promptly reimbursed us. If you do have a problem while on the road call Keystone Customer Service first.

We ordered our last Montana on a handshake from our dealer that we had bought from before. After it arrived from Goshen they gave it a thorough inspection for 3 days while testing all systems and adjusting if necessary. After they deemed it ready for delivery we were given all the time we wanted to do our own PDI. After we were satisfied we settled with the dealer and have not had any problems with the unit. I would never buy from a dealer that required payment before PDI and any corrections.

I would never buy or sign any paperwork on a unit until a detailed PDI is done. It has always been my experience buying trailers since 1970, that once you are satisfied with the unit, then the paperwork begins. I always tell the dealer to set the unit up first thing in the morning to power and water, and then leave me alone the rest of the day. Once satisfied, only then do I start the purchase process. Also, unless I have to wait for a part or the problem is significant, I refuse to take delivery until every punch down item is fixed. I also will not order a new construction unit because you don't know what you are going to end up with. We tell the dealer what we want with specifics and it is up to them to find one for me. We just purchased a 2015 3910 from Statesville Camping World, and they brought in two rigs with the exact options we wanted, set them up side by side and we had our pick of the two. One had black leather while the other had the brown leather and they even swapped that out so the rig we picked had the color leather we wanted. So if the dealer is doing his job, He does a PDI, I do my PDI and then we have a third walk-thru PDI at purchase. If a dealer does not want to work my methodology, I walk away.

Our last purchase, dealer did their PDI, I then spent hours, with and without dealer personal, filled tanks, had them install filled propane tanks, tested things over several days. Then said deal and signed paper work. We have the luxury of being close and knowing the owner of dealership, they have been in the RV business for 50+ consecutive years, so I know where to find them. DO NOT SIGN or PLACE DEPOSIT until PDI is done, if they sell it out from under you, they make more everyday.

IMHO as others have said, DO NOT take delivery without a thorough PDI, and DO NOT drive it off the lot with anything not working or fixed. They can and sometimes will take their time fixing things once you have, and anything found after you've driven off can be blamed on you. Doesn't matter how wonderful they claim to be (unless the dealership owner is your mother!), be careful, careful, careful! You're sinking a LOT of money into this thing, so remember who will be holding the note if something catastrophic shows up.
