No trouble with tires - Montana Owners Club

As suggested in the "Hey Keystone" section, here is a thread for those of us who are lucky enough to NOT have had tire problems.

My trailer came with Tacoma LT tires, when they wore out (alignment issue, not a tire issue), I replaced them with Yokohama Geolander LT tires. No problems to date. If I have to buy more tires, they will be some kind of LT, not ST.

I just added to the Hey Keystone post that we also did not have any issues with the Tacoma LT tires.

We had good luck with BF Goodrich Commercial T/A tires in LT. We had terrible luck with Goodyear Marathon and Mission tires. Never had Tacomas so can't speak to them. The Freestar tires that Tireco sent to replace our Mission tires are holding up very well so far.

Good idea, John. It's good to hear what tires to stay away from but hearing what tires have performed well for others will really aid the purchase decision when the time comes.

I add to this thread with caution... I still have my Mission OEM made in China tires and after 8,000 miles the only trouble was when I ran over a truck mudflap and punctured two of them. Sears installed a patch n plug and that was over 6000 miles ago. We just returned from a 2400 mile trip to Montana and Oregon Coast. Road surface temps were over 120 degrees in some places and tires were running at 120 degrees. Call me lucky.

I am still running the Tacoma tires that came on my Montana and I took delivery on June 6 2003 they have about 5,000 miles on them, they are not in direct sunlight and I keep a very close eye on them, When they come off the Montana they will go on the rear of the TV, they still have about 80% of the tread left so I get a little more use out of them.

My Missions have been converted into mulch somewhere, at 4500 miles, my BFG Commercial TA's have been great for 20,000 plus miles.

Tacoma LT's 25,000 miles and still going strong. (I hope I don't jinx us by posting this and go out to the barn in the morning and find 4 flat tires)

Yet another Tacoma user with 5 years and over 20,000 miles. They will be replaced this fall only because it is time.

Just a little over 4 yrs (??? Miles), with Tacomas on my 2006 Mountaineer 329RLS, no problems yet...

We put Cooper LTs on our previous trailer and will probably do the same with this one when needed.

I posted on the other thread. About 10K on the OEM Missions. They were doing fine, no problems. Did change them out for Cooper LT's as we did not want to temp fate. I would have changed out any OEM ST tire at @ that milage.

Our Missions still look at good as when they were new. Now with 7,000 miles plus, I read of problems with some. We have made 2 trips to FL from WI plus many travels in the Midwest. I inspect tires very often, includes crawling under to look at.
We will be leaving in about 8 weeks for FL again. I will probably leave them on there for another trip. I know some of you would never even think of doing this.
Last week I adjusted brakes; lube axles; torqued lug bolts; torqued axle U bolts & checked TP to 80 psi.
You know since we took delivery of this trailer two years ago, I have never had to add air! It holds 80# perfect.
I suppose some day the tires will give out. I've talked with many other Montana owners all over & they too are running with their Missions yet. Some with over 20,000 miles!
Some people have changed out their Missions just because of fear from reading all the bad reports about them. You never hear about all the ones that don't have any problem.
I have had more problems with car & truck tires that I have purchased, Belts shifting; can't balance & treads separating.

We blew two tires coming in to Arco Idaho in 2006 (paved over concrete with the bumps and 115 degrees) and the only tire store in town was a Cooper dealer. I stopped in to get all 4 replaced but the only Cooper tires they had to fit were already 5 years old and we did not need that.
They had 4 Renegades which were made by Cooper and they were only 11 months old so I had them installed and we are still running them.
I do not remember the name of the original tires but we ran them for 5 years with no problem cross country twice.

Tacoma tire people beware, after 4 years they start blowing. Mine did., tread was perfect and so was tirepressure. The tread flew off like a recap.

Bummer, that you have such success with a set of tires and don't remember the name. But that's very similar to many of us MOCer's who have CRS (Can't Remember..... Stuff).

Currently 20,000 plus on original Missions. Only problem was slow leak caused by valve stem not tight, checked others and one was half a turn from tight. 3000RK

My OEM Missions are hanging in there for three years and 12,174 miles plus 44 more tomorrow. I am leaning toward the Bridgestone Duravis R500 HDs for replacement when I can't stand the anxiety anymore...
