Interesting article. We do not sign the back of our cards. We write "check ID" on the back. I've never had someone tell me I can't make the purchase because the card isn't signed. And really it doesn't matter. I am one of the lucky ones who has had their card number stolen (all the while I had the card) and used to buy tons of electronic equipment in Istanbul, Turkey. I will also say it was my Wells Fargo debit card (a card I very rarely use -- maybe once a year) and Wells Fargo did a great job of getting my money back in the account within 24 hours.

Only time we've been denied use of a credit card with "See Photo ID" on the back is at the Post Office. They have a hard and fast rule that the "Card must be signed."

Our C/C's say see ID, you would be suprised at how many never look at the back. We very seldom use snail mail, so signature request isn't a issue for us...

I've been placing "Ask For ID" on the back of my cards for many years. Most cashiers don't even look at the back, those that do say, "Wow, that's a good idea!"

Post office is the only one that refused my card because it was not signed. It would be nice if all credit card terminals would require a zip code or pin number before completing transaction, I talked to a visa rep the other day and asked about this and was told that it is the particular merchant that has capability to do this, this is not something the card company can do. We have 2 cards, one for fuel and another for everything else. We onlt fueled at QT stations while in the Phoenix area last winter and our card was comprimised to the tune of $3700.00 which visa took care of. Most of the charges were from TX, Ok and PA.
I never let a card out of my site even when dining out.

Well, if you read the article, it doesn't say you 'will' be denied, it says they have the right to deny you until the card is signed. It also says, sign the card and add "Check I.D." after teh signature.

I have also not signed my cards, but just wrote on the back "See I.D." I have never been refused either, but the article is the article. For what it's worth.

It figures the Post Office would be the only ones not in tune with the times... I had a tax refund check, one of the biggest we ever received, stolen right out the back of the P.O. truck. It took a year to get a replacement. The Federal Government and USPS at its fastest. I couldn't get a stop payment or anything and that was knowing from my letter carrier told me it was stolen that day. I called both the USPS and The FEDs, but was told that we had to send in the information by, you guessed it, U.S. Mail. Even the Post Office and Feds I was working with it said it was archaic and stupid, but it's "procedure".

They only asked me one time to sign my credit card, then, I said, "no thanks, never mind" and don't shop there any more. There are plenty of other ways and places to not have to deal with them. Too bad this is gonna cause them to go belly up. If a company doesn't get with the times, they won't be around for very long. I fear the U.S. Postal Office is gonna go bye-bye real soon. So many other companies are eating their lunch. The only thing I get from them these days is junk. All else is internet, email or someone else. Too bad, so sad, but what can you do?

I have been asked by others to sign my card, and I'll tell them why I don't. If they don't like it I take my business elsewhere or use something else.

I have for years been putting "Ask for ID" on the back of all my cards including the ones issued to employees. We have never been denied use of the cards. This includes the post office. We have used post offices all over the US and the cards are always happily accepted. I guess we have just been lucky.

Several years ago when I first started putting ask for ID on the cards I was challenged once. I was told I must sign the card to prove it was mine. When I questioned if I signed the card in front of them what does that prove? That I signed the card but it still does not prove who I am. The kid had this very puzzled look on their face. Another employee came over and told them to just run the card.

I will admit that in the past few years I do get asked for my ID on a more regular bases. About 5%~10% of purchases. It use to be as low as 1%. I have stared to carry my ID with the card in my front pocket instead of my wallet. Easier to get to.

Interesting information. We do not sign our cards. They are either blank or have the "ask for ID" on the sig block. Never been denied a transaction. We have been asked for our ID and recently it seems to be a bit more often.

I found it interesting that the "never let the card out of my site" thing seems to not make any difference as to whether or not there may be illegal activity on an account. The only person to suffer any actual damage indicated the card itself was not compromised. That means somewhere along the line; Either over the phone or online the account number was captured and then probably sold to some thief who then made many illegal purchases. There are so many ways a card can be compromised that the only really secure thing to do is to make sure one knows what is going on with their cards at all times. In today's world it is fairly easy to do via the WWW. Good luck to us all, Dennis.

Over 10 years ago, while working for NASA, Johnson Space Center, Houston, as an Information Security Specialist, I attended a CI Course on "Security." Security is a wide expanse of scenarios. During the course we were directed to a web site that one could generate a credit card number from about 150 banking institutions. You could pick the CC type, like Visa, MC, EMex, etc. Once a CC number is generated, all one needs is a Card Writer and the numbers could be put on the magnetic strip. Where do you get the magnetic strip - any hotel - just check in, change the information on their magnetic strip, go to a store, swipe the card up to the limit of the store, and do it as many times in a day as you would like. Then go back to the hotel, tell them at the desk that you card doesn't work in the door - they give you a new one and throw the old on away.

During the course, we generated a CC number for demonstration purposes. Remember that back then CCV numbers were not widely used. Since we were in a CI course, and the instructors were all "agents or whatever" of sorts, we actually had access to a world of databases. The instructor plugged the number we had generated into the database. The card number actually belonged to a gentleman in Ohio.

So, your CC number can arbitrarily be generated and used in such a manner.

I can't find the original site for CC generations, but here is one that is present day:

Just For DEMO purposes

I have noticed a trend in the last few years especially with the swipe the card yourself units. Nobody looks at the signature. I have let my signature go to a very lazy state when signing CC transactions. Usually a variation of my first initial and a squiggly line! Back on topic, I have not been able to get anything I've written on the cards to stay. Ink pen, sharpie, they all wear off anyway so I've quit writing on them and like I said I hardly ever see anyone look at them anyway. LOL the Post Office made me sign my card but it wore off too!

With the new cards with chips in them they don't need a skimmer, or any thing else! A scanner picks up ALL your numbers as you walk by with the cards in your wallet or purse...

Carl,
When I receive the card with the chip in it, the first thing I do is put it on the anvil and with a hammer, smash the chip. It does not render the card invalid. It can still be swiped or manually inputed into the system.

They also now provide little foil cases. I have one for each of my CC's. It blocks the scanners. If you prefer to use the proximity method of the chip, you could make a block for the card with aluminum foil. Just make a "to size" sleeve, stick it in where you put your CC in your wallet, and slide the card in and out of the aluminum foil to use it. I personally like smashing the little "chippie." It gives me a very temporary satisfaction.

I like that! Render the chip unreadable, get a little exercise and the satisfaction of mashing something!!
