Sailun failure part 2

I debated about posting another failure, but might as well put it out there. So in Utah on our way home we blew another tire. Tpms alerted me but I couldn’t pull over no room. By the time I did the drivers side I skirt was toast. I limped to the next exit 8 miles at 15 mph. Assessed removed the skirt screwed in the skirt that was still attached. Assessed the hydraulics, the propane line abs moved to the tire situation. Changed and moved forward. Still waiting and will call big o Monday since they did not call me.

Tires were checked before we left Jackson hole, which is where we got the new tire from the first blow out. All 110 cold.

Man oh man, I sure hope these Vietnam made Sailun tires don’t tarnish the tire brand.

I’ll need to look but should be the same as the other one that blew. Purchased same time.

CalandLinda mentioned the DOT manufacturer code 1YJ
SHANDONG HUATAI TYRE CO., LTD. - CHINA
And the tire has made in Vietnam stamped on it. Perhaps these are knock offs?
Has been known to happen.
All the more reason to report it and DOT investigate this.

BTW, The new one I put on is 1YJ. Date code 4920 Made in Vietnam.

Does anyone have any advise on replacing the side J skirt. I’m going to order it and pick up an air nibbled and some Construction paper to make a template. But advise would be appreciated.

Cal sorta admitted he erred on the Manufacturer Code when he posted the link to the newest 2021 Maufacturer Codes in one of the other Sailun posts. 1YJ is Sailun of Vietnam.

Sailun and Cooper Tire have gone in partnership with the new tire plant in Vietnam. http://www.tractionnews.com/cooper-t...plant-vietnam/

Quote from the December 2018 article about the plant in Vietnam sited by Rohrmann…
“Construction of the facility is expected to begin early next year with tire production commencing in the first half of 2020.”

Looks like forum members have been testing out the early production runs.

I noticed that too. I had been hearing info about the Hercules tires and found out they are made in that plant too. Used to be made in Malaysia.

That is unfortunate and thanks for posting. I wouldn't trust the other two tires at all if they are close to mfg date and location.

I just finished calling the NHTSA and posted the complaint. Gave them all the required information. From the FB group I know there are several more that have had the same problem I had and I directed them that way for more information. Not sure if this will do anything but thought might as well….

Thanks, Tony. I have about 300 miles on 3 new ones. The fourth was lost by FedEx and Simple Tire replaced it. It's sitting at my S&B waiting for my return. I hope these tires hold up. Getting the new rear axle installed next week.

We just left Mor/ryde yesterday after having our suspension serviced.
Was talking to Gary Wheeler, who many know, and he thinks all Sailuns are now coming out of the Viet Nam plant, so they may bear watching.
Rather interesting about Cooper, since they were just purchased by Goodyear.
"AKRON, OH – June 7, 2021 - The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (Nasdaq: GT) today announced that it has completed its acquisition of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, finalizing the merger agreement made public on February 22"

Now What?

My Sailuns are 2016 and have 19000 miles. I should replace them but with what?

No personal experience, but that's what I envision a disintegrated re-tread tire looking like after a failure. Surprising to see that kind of catastrophic delamination in a new tire. Suggests a serious process control issue at the manufacturing plant which could mean a significant number of similarly defective tires. Will be interested to see if a recall is issued.
