Touching the drum really depends on age or damage to the drums. Mine looked good for the first three years and then parts not in their normal position lead to the magnet surface messed up. I think you might find there aren't many places that will do this work anymore. Brake shoes will seat into the old drum just fine. You can improve things greatly by ditching the drag stoppers and going to disc brakes.
