Ladders

Hi: My wife has posted, but I have not, so here goes. Can anyone give me some information about what kind of ladder would be good to carry with us when fulltiming? Also would I be able to strap it to the rear roof ladder, as I have seen some folks do when traveling. I would like to find a compact ladder that doesn't weigh too much. Any information would be very helpful. I have learned so much reading the posts on this forum. We can't wait to order our 3400RL as soon as we make the deal. I hope I can share something important when we get some experience under our belt.

If you do a search back a couple months there were two threads on this I think. I don't fulltime but we found a great light one at the Container Store. Others will be along with their thoughts.

Welcome Ray.
There are several collapsible type ladders you can purchase. Camping World carries them. I have both a 12-ft telescoping ladder which costs $240 and a 5-ft ladder that folds into a 5 ft by 4 inch package. I keep both in my outside storage area.

There will be others who have similar ladders and they'll be along to share what they have.

Bill will be the best one to tell you about our ladders but I just couldn't help notice that your wifes name is Coleen. I named my daughter Coleen too with only one L. Not too common, but the ironic part is that her last name is Ray. Welcome to the forum.

We also use a 12-ft telescoping ladder

I store it in the tool box in the back of the truck.
Out of site until I need it.

I just bought a ladder from COSTCO. folds into a step ladder or flattens out into a 17 foot extension ladder. Will hold 300 lbs and weighs about 25 pounds. Cost was very reasonable, $99.00 and construction is very good! I am a heavy person at 275 pounds, and have had no problems with it. I strap it to our outside ladder, and lock it in place iwth a bike locking cable. Folded up it is about 4 feet long, and hangs great off of a bike rack tha I have.

Melv keeps a 6 foot Fiberglass ladder in the basement compartment up against the side as it fits there nicely. We carry 2 bikes with us, so the bike rack is taken. He is always looking for something else more convenient but so far those he sees that would satisfy his needs are way too expensive, and he would rather take the inconvenience over the overpriced ladders. Plus, the ladder doesn't really take up that much room, it is just a little bit difficult to get to if we are carrying a lot of stuff in the basement compartment.

Lee bought me the little giant for christmas it was onsale at sears, it is a great ladder and stores in a small place, I'm making a rack to hold it under the rig ot the way

I also carry a 12' telescoping ladder. I noticed that a recent Sears (Canada) catalogue had them listed. I would expect that Sears in the US would carry them also.

rickety, I believe that's called a Gorilla Ladder, I have one too. I am also over 250 and feel comfortable on it at full extention.

There are a lot of choices out there so it comes down to what you want in a ladder and how you intend to use it. I finally decided on the little giant. It is also the most expensive but it is extremely well made, small enough to fit across the bed of the truck or in the rear seat, the step ladder expands high enough to reach the top of trailer for waxing and when fully extended to a 17' ladder it can be used to easily get on the roof. I also will use it around the stick home too. Check them all out, think about what you want it for and then what ever decision you make it will be right for you.

I purchased a Gorilla Ladder from Home Depot....less than $100...and worth every penny. It is similar to a Little Giant Ladder...very versatile.

I have and love the 7 footer from Camping World, the one that folds up to 3 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches by 7 feet. Slides into the basement crosswise and takes very little storage room.

The 6 footer is quite a bit cheaper but the 7 footer lets me reach anywhere on the Montana. The 6 footer left me a bit short of reaching the top without standing on the top rung. I used to have the 6 footer.
