quick question on water heater/dewinterize

Hi. I'm trying to dewinterize right now. The annode bar (?) is out of the water heater and when I hook up the hose, water pours out of the opening. So my question is: should I leave the annode bar out and let the water pour out or leave it in? Hopefully, the dealer has bypassed the water heater and I haven't yet returned the valve to non-bypass.

I believe that you're not in bypass or you've got a failure of the check valve. My understanding of the way it's supposed to work is that in bypass the water supply bypasses the water heater when you open any of your faucets. You should be able to go around to each faucet and open them to get the antifreeze out. When all faucets have clear water you've dewinterized. You would then unbypass the water heater and let it fill up so you can use it. I'm sure you'll get additional advice from others on the forum.

So for a simple(ton) man like me does it work this way? If city water is hooked up to the rig and the drain plug that has the anode rod attached is out of the water heater and water is pouring out, then is it NOT bypassed? Just want to be sure before I throw the water heater switch on that I have water in the heater. Thanks...

Wayne, You are correct. If water is running out of your hot water heater you definitely are not in by-pass. Do be careful to not get antifreeze in your hot water heater. We were told it is not a good thing. Make sure you have the by-pass valve closed on the lines. Hook up city water. Run all faucets including outside shower to make sure all antifreeze (ours was pink) out of the lines. Run all faucets until totally clear water comes from each. When clear water is in all lines put the anode rod and plug back in the hot water heater. Open the valve by pass and you should hear the water running into your heater. Make sure your hot water heater is turned off until the heater tank is full of water. There is also a valve on the hot water heater which will require bleeding to let the air out of the tank when filling with water. When water runs out of this bleeder valve the tank should be full. Hope this helps.
