Fresh water tank in winter

We are trying to leave soon from BC to AZ. We have now cleared 2' of snow off the rig but the temperatures are still below freezing. Will there be any problem putting water in the fresh water tank before we leave?

PS On a side note, anyone have any hints for getting the cover off in cold weather?

I would not do it till we got into warmer weather. Take some bottled water till that happens.

With those temps I would think any water you put in would freeze within a few hours unless you kept the furnace running while you were traveling.

Check the weather sites it looks like it is warming up. We left Kelowna on Dec. 27th put water in in Osooyoos. We only put 1/3of a tank when we traveled and when we stop for lunch we turned on the furnace and had no troubles.

Thanks, I was kind of thinking the same thing. Supposed to go up above freezing this week and rain, so I hope it stays that way until we leave.

Don't fill the tank at all. Why carry the weight. Stop where there are facilities to buy food and use restrooms, then fill the tank when you get to your location. For drinking water buy bottles or carry a water jug.

I no longer carry water in the fresh water tank and it saves weight and hassle.

Agreed. We don't put any water in our RV system until we get to a place where there is no danger of freezing. We use pink RV antifreeze to flush for the 2 days it takes us to get to a warmer climate. Not expensive.

I would agree with not filling the tank and just using rv antifreeze until you get to warmer temps.

Do wonder though if the new heated tanks would work to keep a few gallons from freezing in the fresh water tank?

I have camped in the winter, its actually pretty hard for a good amount of water in the tank to freeze up, unless the temps are well below zero. if you are above 0, and are using your furnace, your tank will be fine with about half of water in, especially if you are driving, with it moving, it cant freeze. Now your water lines, that's a different story, much less water, less area, those will freeze up first. Watch the weather and temps, see how much you will be moving, and make a call, as long as your smart, and careful, and use some common sense you can safely use water in the winter....as I said, I have done it.

Boondock and water

I have a 35 gallon tank, I went to harbor frieght and bought a 12 volt pump it has a hose fitting on each side I think I payed around $25 anyway I leave the 35 G. barrel tied in my truck, I pull my truck next to the 5th wheel and I added about 10' of power cord to the pump with clips on the end I hook it to my truck battery and it a few minuites I have 35 gallons transferd to the 5th wheel
