Montana High Country

The other day we were looking at the Montana High Country. We would like some feedback re slide mechanisms and overall quality. We also have a Sierra 2500 Diesel and think we might be over on the towing capacity. We would be interested in hearing from owners.

We almost bought a Montana High Country. I called Keystone and asked several questions. There customer service department told me that the next year model of the Montana (NOT High Country) would have the same slide mechanism but only in the bedroom. He said it was a huge weight savings and they had not had 'that many' issues with them. He said you just had to watch the cable. We ended up going with a Montana for two reasons, the floor plan, and we felt that it was little higher quality. We ended up getting the Montana for only a $1000 more than what we would have paid for the High Country. I just kept wheeling and dealing them down. Good luck making your choice! I don't have any personal experience though.

I would agree, many of us pull with 2500's.

High Country is advertised as a lite weight. I would double check the pin weight, but would think you are fine with your truck.

We pull the 343RL which is 37feet with a 2500 and it pulls like a dream, we only have about 5000 miles 40 nights on it. But no issues to speak of. The cable slides are great, no adjustments so far. Our dealer says the haven't had a cable problem yet. And to tell the truth I would rather deal with a replacement cable then a hydraulic hose. The mattress sucked, replaced with sleep number. So far so good.

We also have a 343RL pulled with a 2010 2500HD D/A.

The main slide I felt was out of adjustment when new where we had it adjusted by a mobile guy who knew what he was doing. No issues other than that adjustment.

Pin weight when I last weighed it loaded along with full fresh water tank was about 2000 pounds which for what I have in my truck put it about 100 pounds over the 9200 GVWR. Easiest solution to keep the weight cops happy was to lose 100 pounds which I did since the trailer was stored I went on a diet and am presently 20 pounds short of my goal of 100...

2000 pound pin wieght is well below the capacity of the rear axle and tires plus I added air bags which don't do anything for the capacity but it does transfer some (albiet not much) of the rear weight to the front when pumped up.

We have been fulltiming in our High Country for 1.5 years now - pull with an F-250. We like it and (knock wood) have no trouble with the slide mechanisms. Everything still looks good - great hot water heater to - I was worried that it's only 10 gallons, but it heats up quickly.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

If you think that you may be over your tow limits with your truck, I would suggest you get all the specifications on the 5er and your truck and do very careful computations. Because once you own it, if it becomes uncomfortable for you, you will either have to live with it or trade it. Neither of which are very good options. By the way, don't count on an RV salesperson for reliable advice on weight limits because most do not know that information (even though they might think they do).

Before I bought my rig I checked with a number of owners pulling large rigs with the same truck I have. The most convincing was one from Canada that I met in Arizona who said that he hes been traveling to and from his home for a number of years with the same truck I have. The Canadian Rockies were not a hindrance and thus I was convinced. Tires suggested on this site and air bags to keep it level have been added for prudence. Four wheel drive would be something I would like to have but don't.
