Surge protectors
It's time to purchase a surge detector! Anyone have suggestions about type, cost and source.

I have the Progressive Industry 50 permanent install.
Progressive Industry have ones that plug into the pedestal too but I like it hardwired.

I use a 50A hard-wired "Surge Guard" by Technology Research Corporation (TRC). It has served us well with no issues for nearly a year now. Here is a link for buying it at a good price: Surge Guard You may be able to find a better price by doing some looking on the internet but this price is very reasonable. I am not affiliated with this company at all but this is where I bought ours.

It depends on you. How are you going to use it? Are you going to use only 30-amp sources (so you don't have to lug the 50-amp cable around? Then only use a 30-amp surge guard. But if you're more inclined to use 50 amps when it's available, then go with the 50-amp surge guard. I happen to have both the 30-amp and 50-amp portable surge guards because I had the 30-amp surge guard when we had an older unit that only used 30 amps. Do what YOU think is best for you and your usage.

As you can see by my signature, I have the hardwired 50 Amp Electrical Management System by Progressive (the gold standard of RV power protection). I went with this because it automatically protects the unit no matter what cord I plug in (15, 30 or 50 amp)and I don't have to worry about it "walking off" or forgetting it and leaving it at the site when I drive away. As others have said, you need to do what works best for you but DEFINITELY use something.

The hardwired "Surge Guard" works the same as CORattler's does. Once it is wired in it will protect everything past it no matter what the power input source. The only thing with the hardwired systems is, if you are going to use a portable generator and do not have the generator prep from the factory, you will need to add a generator transfer switch in order to power the rig from the generator.....at least we did on ours.

I have the progressive 50 amp hardwired. As for use with generator, has switch to turn off the unit, when generator is used.

Hi folks
Thanks for all the suggestions and info. Today I ordered a Progressive Industries PT-50C. Apparently this is the newer model and replaces the EMS 50-C portable. FYI, I got it from AdventureRV in TN for $362+shipping. It was on the Progressive site for $429.
Thanks again
Rod
