Newbee Questions
Hi, we are “newbee” Monty to be owners. We are looking at purchasing the 3400RL model. My intent is to install G rated tires. Does anyone know the manufacturer and model # of the wheels currently being supplied on the 3400?
One other “Q” I have is now that Mor/ryde has been supplied as the suspension for about 5 years has anyone felt the need for shocks to be added?
Cheers Ken

Welcome to the club. I don't know about the wheels but there is no need for shocks on the Montana that is what the Mor/ryde does and we are quite happy with the system.

Love our Montana 3400...'07 model, and we put on Goodyear G14's last April and the rims provided were rated for the upraded tire. The original stamp was lower, but they re-rated them and added a sticker for the extra pressure. Saw GY G14's at Camping World about a month agofor 239 per tire. Not a bad price considering we spent 1700$ on them. We did spend the extra and had metal stems put on. Teresa

Welcome to the MOC Forum!
The new style rims on the 2010s are marked with the ratings on the back of the spokes. Like This

Thank you very much. That was the info I needed. The plan is to install Goodyear G614RST. I have been using them on our current Trailer and they have been great (50000 miles - 80000 KM).
Cheers Ken

The Mor/Ryde is a shock absorbing equalizer. Adding another shock, in my opinion would be a redundancy. There have been a few delamination problems with the rubber shock absorber in the Mor/Ryde, but I have not heard of that occurring lately. I had to replace one of mine due to delamination. My 340 RLQ is the Big Sky version of the 3400 RL. My 2008 rig was manufactured in July 2007. Later rigs supposedly have the delamination issue resolved.

We did a lot of research on the shock situation with the Mor-Ryde and decided to go with shocks in combination of the Mor-Ryde suspension to decrease the bounce specifically to the backend of of 3400RL over uneven roads and highways ( angled railways raised Havoc!). I installed the Dexter shock package and the shocks have eliminated all noted bounce, especially for the above situations. On the very expensive 5th wheels shocks are standard with the Mor-Ryde and other suspension kits. We have to remember, to keep prices down the Mor-Ryde does what most consumers need on average priced units.

Thanks 8e3k0,
Which shock did you install? How many miles do you have on the new setup and have you noticed any abnormal wear on any of the suspension parts?
Cheers Ken

With my unit, I have not experienced the type of bounce around as described above. That includes the states and Canadian territories you see on my map. Maybe I had better roads or drive differently.

Our 3400RL is 13 months old, purchased new in May of 09. We have approximately 10,000 miles on the unit now and that would be inclusive of the delivery from the factory. Total distance with shocks and Mor-Ryde is about 5000 miles; (installed them Oct. 09)have checked suspension parts a number of times and have not noticed any wear. Installation is not any easy task as angles of the shocks from the axles to frame have to be calculated, measured and holes drills to accept top shock mounts. The kit comes with shock bottom plates to replace the plate on the spring pack.
We drive normal speeds of 60 to 70 miles per hour pending road conditions and have towed many many trailers of different types and found this particular unit did bounce a lot on uneven highways. We could have increased our spring pack number by one, but decided to go with shocks and really appreciate the difference it has made.
If you would like more detail on the above please send an e-mail and I can send a number of photos with description.

Well I am the guy who started the shock debate with my 3000Rk and we did have problems with bounce. In talking with one of the Dexter engineers he said if you have a rear kitchen rv "you needed shocks, peroid" That was when I made the decision to do it. Those of us who have put shocks on have not regretted it. Ellis had contacted me about shocks and I consider him very knowledgable. I was able to feel the difference as soon as I had them installed. It cost me about $500 for the total install and see that Dexter now sell the complete package. So there must be a demand for the shock kit as in the past you had to buy the parts seperately. If I can be of any assistance, I am here, either Pm or on line or by phone

Thank Guys,
We have not ordered the trailer yet but will be in about a month. I'm going to tow the trailer first to see how it handles. I currently tow a 38 ft trailer with a similar floorplan as the 3400rl but it has shocks only. It only bounces on some of the more infamous freeways i.e. I5 northbound. I think the RK models have been known to have a bounce problem with all manufacturers. Thanks again.
Cheers Ken

Ken, we've put 27,777 miles on this 2007 3400RL and have never seen a need for shocks. We also had a rear kitchen, a 2003 3295RK and saw no need for shocks. That may be because Keystone designed the 3295RK with axles farther aft. That would help the ride but it also increased pinweight. Shocks would not hurt, of course, but I just don't see the need for our particular model.
We went to the G614's back in April after many problems with Chinese tires. I'm glad to hear the experience is positive.
Ken, I think you'll find the 3400RL is a very comfortable tow. In May we towed I-5 from San Diego up into LA where we switched to 405. Most highways in CA seem to be rough these days but the Montana behind us was not a problem. The traffic wasn't fun, though.
