Both the DW and I used our cards at the Chevron - paid at the pump - different pumps each time. It was for gasoline only (generator and her Toyota Matrix. I buy my diesel in Bullhead City. At 60 to 65 gallons per fill-up I hunt prices a lot better than Q.

Let state that we don't know for sure that the compromise happened at Quartzsite. The timing was such that Quartzsite is the logical place.

Ours was hit after the time we were in Q but we can't look at our account history any longer (card closed and all). The number could have been picked in Yuma, Parker, Q, or even Tucson (if they were really quick). I doubt the Chevron was it as I always use the "pay at the pump" reader and I check for the sniffer devices. Yet it could be an inside job where an employee replaced the reader with their own "special" one.

Carl,
How does one check for the sniffer devices? I'm really starting to get paranoid about this stuff. Sorry you and so many others have gotten "hit" lately. If you think about it Q would be a perfect place to do scaming. Tens to hundreds of thouands of people in a limited area for a short period of time. Transient merchants on top of all that. Guess there is no really "safe" any longer. Thanks for any info you can share. Dennis

I bought gas at that Chevron with my American Express card, no problems as of yet.

I just found out that Basha's Supermarket had some malware in its corporate system. The Mayor of Phoenix, my brother-in-law in Lake Havasu City, us, and many others were compromised by this malware. It also infected systems at Food City.

So, for us at least, we believe that Basha's is the culprit. The news bit said that when you swipe you card there, it was recorded and re-transmitted to someone who either sold the info or used it to create their own card.

I think that clears Quartzsite (at least for us). There was one day that we went to Lake Havasu City for some medical appointments and both the DW and I used our cards at Basha's. Their spokesperson said that the malware has been identified and removed; making the point-of-sale registers "safe" to use. Hmmm.
