Towing Behind a Monty

My wife & I are to pick up a new 2955RL next week. Currently we tow a small trailer with our two ATV's behind our fifth wheel. I just called Keystone customer service and they said that would void the warranty. I was planning on having a heavier duty hitch installed to tow this trailer (total weight less than 2000 lbs). By the way we dont double tow all of the time.

What have some of you done in such a case?

I don't toe behind the Montana. When we first purchased ours in 2000, just two weeks after the dealer installed the hitch, Keystone came out with a declaration to the dealers that the chassis warranty would be voided. However, we have observed many Montanas in a double-tow situation. I guess it's up to the owner as to whether or not the risk is worth it.

Possibly, you might get better clarification if there is a way you can contact Lippert directly.

keystone said what they said and the probabilities are they mean it. We had a 2 inch class C hitch installed on our 06 3400. We have two bikes back there (regular bikes) We do not tow behind the Montana nor would we suggest you do so. Many folks tow many things behind many brands of campers. You gotta do what you gotta do... understanding the possible consequences.

It would be a no brainer for me, I would not void my warranty on a new Montana. You mentioned a new and bigger hitch, I think that's only half the problem The other problem is a weak frame, we can't fix that.

I've replyed to this question before, but hey it keeps getting asked and answered. I've had 2 brand new Montana's (2850RK and 2980RL) and have towed a double jetski trailer or currently a SeaDoo jetboat behind them thousands of miles without issue. The gross weight of either was less than #1850 with a toungue weight of about #160. Would I pull a full sized bass boat ... no. I made my own hitch out of 3" square tube with 1/4" wall thickness and bolted the end plates to the fiver frame. I did have to move the rear jacks forward a few inches. As mentioned in posts above ... some don't recommend it, but I think "go with what you personally are comfortable with". We go to lakes alot and driving 2 separate vehicles wasn't the way we wanted to go.

Up to you of course, but I would do nothing to void the warranty.

Look at Idaho Tote on line. Very expensive about $5000.00 but recomended by a Keystone rep. to us. I am sure it would also void the warranty. It is a excellant set up. The web site has a video to watch, very impressive.

DO the idaho totes not put any weight on the back of the frame. I was just wondering since it is hooked to the frame and has to be pushed around corners from side to side. Just thinking out loud????. Seems to me it would be worse than a reg trailer.JMHO.

There are two Montanas towing quads in the park we are in. I was talking to the guy the other day and his consensus was the same as mine. Keep the weight down and the hitch weight to around 300lbs and no problem. Our trailer is way past warranty so I don't worry about frame problems. I also don't anticipate any problems.
