Goodyear VS Hankook 5th Wheel tires info needed

Hi all,

We just had a tire blow out on our 09 Big Sky. Thankful that no one was hurt and only light damage to the rig.

I’ve read many links on what tires are recommended and still confused. I’ve narrowed it down to Goodyear Unisteel G614 RST or Hankook RH03. I find all kinds of pros/cons on the Goodyear but no negs on the Hankook.

Does anyone have this info?

Thanks and safe travels to all,

Ron and Linda

I have yet to hear any bad remarks about the Hankook tires.
I did find some reviews about the RH03 that may help,

I think you're comparing apples to oranges - unless I missed something (not a first). The Goodyear's are G rated, something like 3450 pounds while the Hankook are only E rated, 3040 lbs. If your loaded trailer weighs 14,000 and your pin weight is 2,000 (I'm just throwing some numbers out here folks - don't tell me how wrong they are!) that leaves 12,000 pounds on the tires. For the Goodyear's, 4 tires x 3450Lbs = 13,800Lbs capacity while the Hankooks would be 4 tires x 3040Lbs = 12,160 capacity.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Don't know anything about Hankook, but have owned many Goodyear G614's and never had any issues. We are now running Goodyear G114's 17.5" tires and we hope that we get as good of service as the G614's. GBY....

I think the G614s are 110 lb tires and the rims/wheels have to be either certified , or re-certified and stickered, for that pressure.

I was just talking to my tire dealer today about a tire that I got from someone on this forum. The Bridgestone Duravis R500 HD. For some odd reason it is extremely difficult to find on Bridgestone's website. But if you Google it, it shows up all over the internet... LT235/85R16 with a 120R Service Description (3086# - 106 mph @ 80#). My dealer was impressed with the sidewall and shoulder build on this tire. Load rating was 3086. I have 6K axles.

Ron and Linda,

We also have an 09 Big Sky, and had a blow out after only 2000 miles. We switched to G614's this Spring, and they have served us well. Over 7000 miles on them this summer. You will have to change rims to take the higher pressure, but for safety and peace of mind it is worth the sacrifice. Got mine direct from Tredit, about $1400 for the set. Too bad Keystone won't put decent tires on the Big Skys!

After talking to a Kingston 5th wheel owner in this RV park and seeing the damage he incurred this past week from a G614 tire blowout I decided to go with the Michelin XPS. He is waiting for the ‘authorization’ to know where to take his rig for repair. He also had Michelin XPS replacements for all 4 tires mounted yesterday (go figure). We just found this out last evening.

I also talked to a local Oregon (retired) OTR log truck driver. He said that in 30 years he never had a blowout with Michelin and the companies he worked for would only put Mic on their trucks and trailers. He did say he never had a 5th wheel or trailer but figures with the weight of the carried logs and the speed he would have to drive at times to make up delays (70+) that he would highly suggest Michelin.

We spent about 8 hours on the internet and never found a Michelin separation blowout (but know that this has probably happened....just admit to the fact that I’m learning every day and don’t know everything).

So, I’m having 4 new Michelins mounted on our rig today. I’ll let you know what I think.

Oh, I did replace my 2500HD truck tires with Michelins about 4 months ago and have had Michelin automobile tires in the past without problems. But I have also had numerous brand tires on cars without problems too (including Goodyear).

Wish us luck. Happy and safe travels to all and thanks for all your suggestions,

Ron and Linda

Aren't the Michelin's too light? They are rated for something like 3040.

3042# I think, Tom. And yes they would not match well with 7K axles and associated load. Might be OK on my 6K axles, though, if I didn't go overweight...

soonerhooligan,

I bought this new in Jul 08. These were the OEM tires:

Goodrich Tire, Ultra CRT, Radial Trial, ST235/85R16, AG13 DOT AGOR 0308.

Tom S,

Yes these would be on the weight edge of the rigs axels vs the rating. However, after reading numerous posts about the XPS and talking to the log truck driver (who also stated that the trailer weight on some of the big log loads exceed the 12k and/or 14k of our 5iver).

Again, time will tell and I'll try and keep ya informed.

The selling dealer in Billings MT said yesterday that these tires should not have seperated like they did (no, I don't believe everything I hear either). I will try to get a rebate from Goodrich but have already replaced the tires, paid for them and will not hold my breath.

Just want to get back on the road as safe as possible for me and all of you adventurers.

Happy and safe journey to all,

Ron
