tacoma tires on 2005 Mountaineer

I have 10 or 11 thousand miles on my load range e stock tacomas which Montana used before missions. I never hear any negatives on tacomas. Since they are almost 5 yrs old, although they look great, do I need to replace them. Trailer weight on axles as per scales is 9300 lbs, tires rated at 3195 each x's 4 =12,780 so I'm not close to overload. Please advise. Thanks, Ray

we also have tacomas on our 2005 Montana and have had good luck with them. I have not looked at replacing them at this time. after checking for wear or dry rotting they look like new. So I will keep an eye on them and take it from there. There is some rule of thumb on when to replace tires, someone will check in with that info. But as anything else do what YOU feel comfortable with, you are the one towing your pride and joy.

I also have Tacoma's on my 2005. Also around 11k miles. I try to drive not more than 58 miles per hour. Keep 80#'s pressure. I see no cracking and check them very carefully before each trip. I think I can get at least 1 more year, especially if I watch my speed and air pressure. Very pleased with the Tacoma's. Waiting hear from all the experts also.

We also had Tacoma's on our 2005(built in may 04)rig. I replaced them last year because I was starting to see checking on the sidewall and cracking around the bead. The probably had around 10k on them. My tire guy bought them to use on an off road truck :-)

I have them on my 2005 2955RL and have often wondered about them. I don't know how many miles are on them as I bought the Montana used. They are not cracking and show no signs of wear. I guess I will keep a close eye on them and keep them for a while.

Ray, I had Tacoma's on my 04 2955 and after 3 years I never saw any kind of cracking. Unfortunately I traded in on an 07 and this rig came with the infamous Missions. I won't go into my feelings about the Mission rags.
The Tacoma's were quite possibly the best tires Montana (Keystone) ever used. WHY they switched to Missions, other than price, makes no sense to me. Back when we all had the LT Tacoma's you rarely saw a post complaining about them. As far as this forum, an old time tire guy such as myself was rarely commenting about tires. Than came Missions and since than Lonnie and I have been swamped with threads, Emails and PMs asking advice.
Anyway, at 5 years it would be advisable to keep a close watch for cracking. Fine little surface cracks are nothing to get excited about but when they begin to appear deeper than maybe you should start thinking about replacing.
If possible take them to a reputable tire shop for their professional advice. By "reputable tire shop" I AM NOT referring to the likes of Wal*Mart, Sam's Club, Costco, et al or your neighborhood garage who also happens to sell tires.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I'll hang in there for another year and hope my ship comes in so I can trade for a new 3400. Ray

I too have Tacoma's on my 2005 3650RK (Built in May 04) with about 20,000 miles on them. They still look great, but one blew out last Fall on our way down to FL. About $1200 in damage (minimal) was done which has since been repaired. I always carried 80# pressure and checked at every stop. In fact they rarely lost pressure from year to year. The tire blew a couple miles down the road from a refueling. The tire and bearing was not hot to the touch and had 80# in it when checked at the fuel station.

For our trip back to Michigan in a couple weeks, I will be changing them out to the Goodyear Marathon 235/80R16's with load carrying capacity of 3420# each. I figure 5 years is a pretty good lifetime and decided not to take the chance even though they still look great with little to no visible wear. Hope this helps in making your decision.

Jim

I have the Tacoma tires on my 2004 that I took delivery in June of 2003 they have about 5,000 miles on them and they still look to be in pretty good shape no signs of cracking in the side walls, They where made by copper tire and are not being made any longer as far as I can find. Make purfectly good sence to get a good product and replace it with chinese junk. I will leave these tires on until I notice any thing that coould lead to a tire falure, KNOCK ON WOOD.

Our 03 Mountaineer has Tacoma tires and they still look like new. They have about 8,000 miles and show no signs of weathering. We do keep them covered. The air pressure is always at 80psi and I check them with a heat gun every time we stop.
