DEF

Does anyone know how many miles I should be getting with a tank of DEF. I have a 2013 Ram 3500 and it seems I am having to fill it more than I should have to.

I didn't know that the Cummins engines were using DEF.
My 2009 has a DPF.

I have a 2012 F-250, and when towing I get about 4000 miles on a fill-up of DEF.

I've purchased it at Ford dealers and auto supply shops. The auto supply shops are cheaper. I had one Ford dealer fill it up for me, cost me about double of what I should have paid, whereas another Ford dealer just handed me the same box of DEF I purchased at an auto supply store, but it was only a couple of bucks more expensive.

I now carry a box with me.

My 2012 Ford F250 gets between 4 and 5K on a DEF tank which is about 5 gallons. I fill up DEF at Flying J or DEF or Pilot in the truck lanes usually or on a long trip take a box with me just in case I need it.

I asked the service tech what the mileage should be for the DEF on my 2012 3500 Chevy and he told me the average tank of DEF will last around 5000 miles whether I'm towing the Monte or not! Since Chevy was the first to put it on their trucks they put the filler spout under the hood and it's a bear to fill unless you use a gallon or two and a half gallon container of DEF with the filler tube that comes with them. I tried once at truck stop and will never try it again unless Chevy comes out with some other location. The filler tube will hold the DEF filling spout from the pump BUT it can not handle the volume the pump puts out. DEF all over the engine compartment because there is no breather tube to let out excess air from the DEF tank while filling! If there is one, it's totally inadequate. Don't know about the newer ones but mine has this problem!

I buy a gallon jug of the DEF from O'Rielly's and use that to fill my Chevy using the fill tube you get with the 2.5 gallon jug. As others have said, you end up with DEF all over the engine using a larger jug.

Agree, we get about 5K and unlike the GMCs, Ford has a DEF fill cap right next to the diesel cap which makes it easy.

I am getting in DEF Tow Mode about 4300 miles now. More if computer is set to non Tow Mode. Takes just short of a box to fill mine up. Paying less than $11.00 at Autozone. I just keep box in tool box. On the road most truck stops have dispensers at specific pumps. Not a big deal.
