new hitch
well we will see how this goes im sure it will be controversial.
i got my 2008 f350 dually with the b&w turnball in the bed so i did some research and went with the anderson ultimate hitch. it mounts to the ball in the bed ( the frame does) then it has anoter ball at the top that is adjustable and it will attach to the kingpin with a adapter. it puts everything up there just the same way as the 5th wheel plate but is a ball like the gooseneck trailes have. getting ready to try it out the verdict is out but if i dont like it i can go back to a b&w companion

I have never tried one but they seem to get lots of good reports. Seems it would be a little more difficult to hitch up as you would need to be precise in aligning the ball under the hitch, whereas with a 5th wheel hitch you just need to be close side to side and just back into it.
And being a ball hitch aren't you required to have safety chains?

I'm wondering with all the offsets in the setup, how do you end up with the centerline of the hitch point over or just in front of your rear axle?

there is only a 4" in. off set sort to speak from the block that attaches to the kingpin to where the ball hooks into. it is made so that it can be used with long pin boxs and morye ride pinboxs. you will still have the center of the kinpin either over or just aft of the axle.

that should be about right on then because the kingpin would be just fwd of axle, yes i need to do all my weights again with this truck because it is a dually and my old one was a 2008 f250.

We finally (after over 5 months) just picked up our new fifth wheel and towed it home 6 hours with the Andersen Ultimate fifth wheel hitch. It worked great and had zero clunking or movement. This is the first time for me towing with a fifth wheel, so my experience doesn't matter very much. But I could not find one bad review on the Andersen, it is much cheaper than traditional hitches (I actually didn't care how much I needed to spend), and it only weighs 70 pounds to get it out of the truck. I didn't have any problem lining up with the ball because I can easily see it out my back window. I bought the safety chains to go with it, but didn't use them for the trip home. I will probably only use them in states that require them (that is still a grey area).

I think the way it is engineered is key. It is rated for a lot more. They have a stress test they performed on their website and it was impressive. They actually have an aluminum version now that only weighs around 30 pounds!!

Probably not something you would ever get checked for unless you were stopped for some other reason. Could cost you a few dollars if that happened. But would certainly be a good idea to have them in case you were stopped and not allowed to continue with the trailer without them connected.

i just hooked up my monty today and towed with it for the first time with the anderson hitch it feels secure and strong. no chuncking when going down the road the ultimate hitch is rated for 24.000 gvtw gross vehicle trailer weight. the vertical pin weight is 4.500 lbs. i feel secure with this with my monty at 16000. gvtw and around 3000 lb pin weight

I have the anderson ultimate hitch and would not go to anything else I had a 5th wheel connection and it was so noisy and the hitch in the box weighed over 200 lbs so was always left in the box. Now when I am not connected to my 5th wheel my box is fully accessible. Its great. As the old saying goes best thing since sliced bread.

Well you probably have no reason to change, but for first time buyers it would be foolish not to take a look at the Andersen. They are getting great reviews ,and there's really no big downside to them.

I am glad that you guys are happy with that style of hitch. I see a lot of them, usually on stock trailers but it appears to be a good system.
I just installed a R20 Reese in my truck and between it and the MoreRide fifth wheel pin I had no noise or chunking etc. I will say that my older Reese had some noise but the Old Vanguard fifth wheel hitch pin was also completely solid unlike what we have on our Montana's.
