Electrical protection from spikes and surges

The common and best known devices are the 'strip' power supplies that have a plug on one end and several outlets in a row, some have spike and surge protection. Many of us have our computers powered from these.
The brand name 'Surge Guard' makes the plug-in protection we can buy from Camping World, PPV, and other RV outlets. These add over/under voltage and open neutral protection to the mix. There are other models and brands, some hard wired and some plug-in.
I use a simple hard wired model made by Intermatic. It is far less expensive, but does not provide the open neutral and does not state over/under, but I suspect it has some protection for that, as it is electronic and that would be an easy feature for them to include that ability. The devices sacrifice themselves in the event of a serious spike or surge and have to be replaced. I have not read that the 'Surge Guard' needs to be replaced, except in a very close, or direct lightning strike.
I have protection devices in the house, and one in the Montana.
I am plugged in outside, in a recent electrical storm, the Montana evidently got a spike, as my Red light came on on the device, so I will replace it. My system has a transfer switch, for a generator/Inverter and switched for shore power, I have mine wired into there. You can wire them into your main panel, it is just two Black power wires, a neutral and a ground. Intermatic states that you can use a two pole 15 amp breakers, but that is optional. I just wired mine into the incoming power supply at the transfer switch.
I will include some links so you can read about the subject.
I just want to let you know there are options on Spike and Surge problems.
