Landing gear replacement

After 10 years the landing gear broke. A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the landing gear was not evenly extended as they always are.

So yesterday I took a look. I first hitched it to the truck and that was the last little life the legs had.

I took a peek inside. The cross-shaft that connects to to legs had broken the shear pin on the motor (or lead) leg. This should be easy to fix. Bwahahaha!

It turns out the jack screw in the lead leg failed the last time I unhitched the trailer. This caused the follow leg to support the weight as I raised the trailer off the hitch. Something had to give and it was the shear pin on the lead side that did.

The legs are actually pretty easy to remove through the LP storage bays. The follow leg is harder as I have to cut an access door in the generator compartment to access the shear pin.

Here is a gentleman that had a similar failure and his story
https://www.loveyourrv.com/repairing...l-landing-leg/

I thank him for locating all the parts and providing links. I have new new legs arriving on Monday. Till then the truck is captive holding up the fiver.

Been there and done that. Twice.

The lead leg was the hard one on our Wildcat. The hydraulic pump/tank was directly in the way of removing the landing gear leg. Still only a few hour job though. I used wood blocks on both sides under frame to support ours while removing/installing new gear. The truck was simply always in the way.

This year we got the follow leg replaced along with the gear box that had a broken plastic cover. I replaced the lead leg last year (really a RV tech did it). So now I have basically 2 new legs, new motor, and a gear box with a metal cover. All is well after several years of "are we going to make it or not" conditions. Lots of weight on those components, if one fails--look for damage to other components or future new failures. Experience sure helped me figure it out.

For my $$ I would be fixing it with a new level up system.

A couple of years ago the landing gear failed the third time and I had to hand crank it to get the 3485 back on the truck. It was a 2008 Montana. Got it home and called Venture, who made the electric jacks. They told me that since we had a washer/dryer that the system should have been dual motor, as their system wasn't designed for that much weight. Three days of cutting steel where the slave jack was to install the new master/motor jack and rebuilding the original motorized jack and installing the second wiring harness. We had a bulletproof landing gear with the ability to extend the jacks independently.

I have a NEW 2008 Lead landing gear that I purchased years ago from Lippert. I never used it. Traded in the fifth wheel. I am about to throw it away. Will give it away to anyone who wants to arrange to get it?

How did you remove/replace the hydraulic pump/tank for the lead leg job?
It’s my turn now with my Mountaineer! Thanks!

West, this is a post regarding the old style electric front landing gear. No hydraulics.

Regarding Creeker's reply with the same challenge...How did you remove/replace the hydraulic pump and reservoir mounts for the lead leg job? Thanks!

The hydraulics are for the slides…just in the way for a lead leg replacement.
