Emergency brake cable and switch

While unhooking my 5er the emergency brake cable caught on the hitch and pulled out of the electrical box. I popped it back in but wonder if I will have issues when I try to pull later this week. Did I do right by just shoving it back in the electrical box?

No issues. It just pops back in.

OMG, this is the first time this has ever happened - NOT! You will be fine. I assume you noticed the problem pretty quickly and by replacing the switch you released the brakes,

On a previous (SOB) trailer, our emergency brake cable got caught in the hitch during a tight turn. We have an 8' box and can therefore turn tighter than those with shorter boxes. DH had to cut the cable as it was caught up so badly.

We now have one of those curly ones (like the cord on a landline phone). It stays out of the way a lot better.

Before this happened, another fifth wheel owner we met at a campground told us a story of his trailer stopping dead during a turn in a town. He did not know what had happened and it took him quite a while to figure it out. He said if that ever happens to us, check the brake cable first. As soon as it happened to us, his words came back to me, and sure enough, it was the brake cable.

No problem as long as you popped it back in along the slot lines and did not jam it. Has happened to most of us one time or another.

Those switches are not much of a design but seem pretty rugged. In 50 years can only recall replacing one that I had to and that was after it got physically damage. I also pull that switch pin when I bleed the disc brakes.

If for any reason that you are concerned, they are only 10-12 bucks and take a few minutes to replace.

Oh and those curly wires - they do work nice keeping the wire out of the hitch. I use the 4 foot version

I was one that had the cable catch during a U-turn. Fortunately it was on a non-busy street that was about 6 lanes wide. I was mostly on the other side with the back of the trailer in the center lane. A pickup wasn't too happy with me, tho! I knew what it was and got it fixed within a minute. It pretty much stops you dead, so easy to figure out.

There are two types of campers. Ones that have pulled it by accident and the ones that are going to.
You did good.

For safety sake we probably all should be pulling them at least yearly to see if they are actually working.

I agree, we should test them at least once a year. We usually travel with a FULL load of fire wood ( I mean I cant get any more surrounding the hitch and filling the entire bed) and have never had the pin pull out.

It's designed to be removed and reinserted. You're good. BTW, pulling the brake plug is a good way to ensure the unit doesn't move when hitching or unhitching. Be sure to put it back in when you're done.

I'm not Dave but the coiled breakaway cable can be found at Amazon, eTrailer, and other sources.
Here is the Amazon link - Clicky

Yep, Carl hit it on the nose. You only need the 4 foot version if your 5er has the standard (now) pin box,

Since we're talking about the emergency brake cable I thought I'd mention that we should all really carry a spare one. I've heard of them being stolen while in a campground!! No fun when you're trying to leave and find THAT surprise!

If that has happened, you have more problems then a missing switch plug. You will find that you MAY have melted wire insulation or failed brake magnets. If you have disc brakes, you WILL have a failed 7-800 dollar hydraulic actuator. I have a toggle shut off on my emergency switch just in case some moron pulls it out while at our summer site. No, I don't forget to switch it back on since the first thing I ever do while pulling out is test the brakes plus clean off any accumulated rust on the rotors

I also use one of the coiled cables. And I attached an eye bolt to one of my hitch handle bolts to clip the cable to. That way it all turns with the hitch and never stretches out when turning and almost eliminates any possibility of catching on anything.

Each spring, I jack one wheel at a time off the ground, pull the breakaway pin, and try to turn that wheel to ensure that the brake locks up. Put the pin back in, jack the next tire, and repeat the sequence. Tests the pin and each brake.

Breakaway cable

Breakaway cable disengages while I was parking it . Now the switch does not go in all the way to seat. Any suggestions? Does it need a light tap?
