Waiting for Hurricane Wilma to Pass By

Hi Everyone,

We're near Cape Hatteras (Outer Banks) at the moment. We're waiting for Hurricane Wilma to pass by and are concerned about the wind. How much wind can our Montana safely sustain? We have no experience with high winds. They are predicting sustained winds of 30-40 mph. I'm guessing that that would be tolerable.

Last year the winds gusted 60-70 here in Spring Hill and Monty never moved. Heck I got 30-35 mph crosswinds driving through Kansas. However I think if you get over 70 gust it would be time to leave the Monty behind and seek shelter.

Think about it....if you are traveling down the highway you are running 60 MPH or so and the Monty tags right along. Point her nose into the wind and you should not have a problem. Like Tom and Betty, we spent a night in Kansas a few years back and wind was 65-70 MPH that night. Trailer shook quite a bit, but survived. Not sure how much crosswind one will take before turning over.

I would stay off the outer banks till you know how close the storm will pass and what the winds might be.Remember most of the outer banks are at sea level, and not very wide in fact at times our GPS read below sea level.Wind may not be much of a problem but storm surge could be..

When we were in Minden we experienced some strong winds, probably 50-70 mph and I thought the gang was crazy (well, actually they are!) to take off in winds of that strength. But the Montana did great. It was very reassuring.

In another 5er not nearly as good as the Montana (and this was the night I had to put the awning up by myself at 3AM in my nightgown) we were in winds of 80mph. Unit rocked and that is all. If this unit stood that wind I would think the Monty can also. However, I do not want to test it!
Happy trails.....................

Thanks for all of your assurances. Turns out everything went well. I'd say we had gusts up to 50 mph. There was just a little bit of swaying in the unit. We feel much more confident now that the Montana can stand quite a bit of a gail. It continues to be windy in the Outer Banks and should remain so until tomorrow. We think the weather is still better than what Pennsylvania (home)has been experiencing though. We're not looking forward to leaving.
