switchgear failure

Has anyone had the pleasure of either switchgear switches going out on them? They are the power seperators switches for shore and generator power
I have had that pleasure twice, and I can say, it was not fun replacing the switchgear box.
It is in the belly storage under the stairs of my 3500rl. Ugh.
And yes, I do use a surge protector.

I've used my Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) for the past 10 years with no problems. It has moved in between 3 different 5th wheels. Granted I don't have a built in generator but it is in use whenever I use my Honda 2000i or hooked to shore power.
I wonder if the difference is that mine is a 30 amp versus your 50 amp ATS.
