Raising trailer

Have anyone or you flipped axels to gain more clearance? Have new ram 2500 4 x4 with Curt hitch on puck mount. Hitch and pin box set at max height to get 6" rail clearance. This causes trailer to be nose high and could cause more weight on rear axel.

We had it done on our SOB to gain clearance due to the F350 4x4 being so tall. We also wanted to upgrade the wheels from 15 to 16 inch to get E rated tires. We checked with the SOB manufacturer and they said it was possible to rotate the axels. The RV dealer who did the work for us has done this job many times. Dexter makes a kit for the job. The SOB handled fine and eventually we upgraded to the Mountaineer. Any good RV dealer or trailer shop should be able to help you out. Good luck.

Actually, for the way the Montana suspension is constructed it's not recommended. We went with Moryde IS and they reset their suspension to match our truck.

Our 2011 Mountaineer the axles are already under the springs so it really can't be flipped so to speak. I was assuming his are above the springs like our 1995 SOB which could.

Take your rig to a scale and find out what the weight per axle is before contemplating axle flipping.
Maybe you don't have a problem or a very small one that can be dealt with in other ways.

If yours is like mine and most Montanas I've looked at they are already flipped as it were.

That is a term used to relate what side of the spring pack the axles are on, topside or bottomside. Used to see some brands with axles above springs, but that was early 2000. John

In many cases the springs are under slung, meaning the spring is below the axle, so the spring mount was welded on the bottom of the axle, some folks "flipped" the axle over using the same spring mount but now at the top. I guess they did not realize this was also changing the camber/caster at the same time. I have seen axles that have been changed from under slung to over slung and they had the spring mount on both sides. "flipping" was just that, flip the axle without new spring mounts to get the spring on top to create over slung and raising the trailer.

As has been mentioned, you can't flip the springs because they are already 'flipped'. You have a few other options: a spring shop can make you springs that will make the unit ride higher - but it may also cause it to ride rougher, or have a frame shop raise the trailer by welding tube steel or channel iron to the frame and then remount the suspension under that. You can also do the last option with independent suspension, which is a better way to go, IMHO.

Doesn't just flipping the axle from the top to the bottom of the springs mess up the camber of the wheels?, and the position of the brakes? Or do the axles stay oriented like they are when above the springs and use different brackets to attached the axles to the springs?

Dexter makes a kit for moving their axles from on top of the springs to below to add running height to the trailer/pinbox. I had it done about 2004 on a SOB due to the height of my F350 4x4 truck. We also upgrade from 15 to 16 inch wheels and from D to E rated tires. This work raised the trailer about 2.5 inches and with the Reese hitch on the lowest setting we were able to get a almost level ride and 6 inches of bed clearance. We towed the unit for several years without any handling issues. Lees RV in OKC has done many of these conversions they told us.

My trailer rode a little nose high and wanted to do something about it. Never understood why people spend hoards of money having their axles removed and a 2" square tube welded on then re welding the axles back on that are probably out of align now, when you can go to the performance truck market and buy new rear spring shackle lowering brackets that lower your truck 2" . New trucks come with a bit of a rake now and this essentially just levels out the truck and lowers your trailer 2" at the same time. Makes no difference in the ride (at least not my Ford 350) and costs a total of $67.52.It will take you an hour of time and the use of 2 wrenches and you don`t have to worry about Fred the trailer guy doing a good job. Just to easy.

Forgot to add it doesn't make your truck squat any more than what you have now hooked up because you overload spring dictates your ride height and the lowering shackles bring your regular springs right to the over load spring but not touching it. The other thing I didn`t like about adding the 2" tube is it raises you step height, I`m old 2" is a big deal. Wife says no it`s not
