European RVs
Our trip to Bavaria was interesting and enjoyable in every aspect. Being a Montana freak, I watched the Autobahn for RVs. There were many, especially around May 1, which is German Labor Day. They looked well made. None of them were the size of the North American units, not even the Class "A" motor homes. As I recall, the longest one was about 25 feet in length. I didn't see one with a slide. I did not see one fifth wheel. Most were 15' to 20' long and pulled behind Audis, BMW's and VW's. The hitches looked like 1" to 1-1/4" pipe coming from under the car or SUV and bending upward about 3" above the bumper and had a small ball on top. I didn't look under the car to see how it was attached. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to get inside an RV unit.
While in Bavaria, we drove a diesel Audi stationwagon. It was a smooth and powerful stick shift. It was clean with no smoke out the tailpipe. Loaded with four adults, we got somewhere between 45 and 55 MPG, including running 95 to 100 MPH on the Autobahn. The best fuel price we could find was 1.03 Euros per liter. That's between $5.00 and $6.00 per gallon. Small wonder that the RV units are small in comparison.
