Black tank drain

Traveling and stopped in Richland, Washington, my black tank drain clogged up. I was using enzyme treatment, and the wrong TP...Charmin, which is the one brand they say not to use. I was able to clear the line with a backflush bladder fortunately.

While filling and dumping the tank several times to ensure it was out of trouble, I see it only drains to within about 2.5 inches of the bottom. Is that normal or should it be completely empty when the drain flow stops? When I dump it, it flows with force, so I assume it's supposed to leave some??

I hope it does not leave some as I would have had a block of ice in mine every winter since '05.

Just curious, how do you "see" that it only drains to about 2.5 inches of the bottom? I can't see my tanks at all.

A number of plumbers in KC who make their living digging up peoples lawns and replacing pipe tell me that they love Charmin as it plugs up regular plumbing lines on a regular basis. On the other issue, my black tank drains pretty much empty. Sounds like you may still have a TP buildup near the drain hole.

Thanks, and yes Dick, I probably still have some build-up. BTW, a flashlight down the glory hole and a stripped tree branch is my gauge method

Just before leaving a campground some people pour a small bag of ice down the toilet to break up any solids in the black tank while traveling.

Where the tanks outlet is on the sides of the tank, and being one who has replaced a tank and tried to repair a tank, there is always some liquid left in the bottom of the tanks.
Before when I winterized the unit, (7th winter in AZ) after everything was drained, I always put a gallon of windshield washer fluid down the pipes so each tank had a gallon of windshield washer fluid in the lowest part of the tank.
Use RV antifreeze in water lines, and use windshield washer fluid in drains (1.00) per gallon.
