Traveling the Oregon coast
I was over on rvnet reading a members journal about their trip thru Oregon. They headed up 101 from Cali in a 40ft motorhome and more than once mentioned how narrow the highway was.
Was this an issue for you people that pulled your 5'ers on this route?
Thanks Again
Ray

Not at all... Several of us have done this route and many more will be doing so this summer... Many of the State Parks have room for the Montana's.. Oregon and Washington are very RV friendly.

We are doing it now. Currently in Florence, OR after staying in Crescent City for a week. It does get narrow in some spots, mostly because of the beautiful trees, but it is certainly a trip worth making. Our next stop will be Pacific City, then Seaside, then inland to Portland, then south to Bend.....We did this trip three years ago when we first started RVing. Loved it then, love it now. Temps have been a little cool and muuh wind near the coast. 50's to high 60's.....

Hwy 101 is fine , it is hwy 1 that you might want to avoid.

Did 101 from LA to Crescent City, then US-199 to I-5 at Grants Pass. Now if you want an exciting ride, 199 is the road to take. I called it exciting. Earlene called it "frighteningly scary." (her words) I was in a 40' MH pulling a TOAD. (I'm just an SOB)

Thousands of RVers travel Hwy-101 every day without incident. The road is fine. It sounds like it is time for that MH driver to move to a sub-compact vehicle.

Ya there is a lot of of those 40"ers on the road and they do not do well off the freeways. Enjoy the trip and the scenery.
Who wants the freeways

Thanks all for the input. I guess it's time to get the truck and FW ready for the trip.
Again Thanks

Hey! Ya'll be careful now. I resemble some of those remarks.
I wish you to know that I did not put a scratch on the SOB traveling this road, US-101.

Ahhh, Wayne, I think I know where that is. And we towed our Montana through there, too. Looks like 101 in the Humboldt Redwwoods area, maybe north of Myers Flat? Gotta watch those trees... they'll jump right out and snag ya but it sure is a beautiful drive.
Actually, that looks like the scenic loop drive off 101 on the old 101 route. Avenue of the Giants, I think it is called.

Steve, it was the Humboldt Redwoods area on US-101. I think I remember having to cross the yellow strip to get around the trees. If traffic had been coming I would have just plain stopped until it was clear to go.

We have driven US-101 all the way through the Redwoods, a little tight with a longbed crewcab towing a 3400.
The drive through the Redwoods was well worth it, just take your time and enjoy the scenery.

I was thinking about taking 395 from Bakersfield to the border.
Is that a bad choice?

Ray I'm confused with your comment above. Hwy 395 does not go to or through Bakersfield. I'm sure you know that but I'm wondering what exactly you mean.
I suspect you are simply asking about taking 395 from the Southern CA area to the OR border. If so I think you'd enjoy that route. Hwy 395 is a good two lane road almost the entire route to OR or at least until you get into Northern CA around the Susanville area. We have taken that route a number of times and we really enjoy the diversity. A a matter of fact when we go back up to OR in September we plan on taking 395.
Have a great trip.
Dennis

Sorry Dennis, should have been more specific. We will be in Bakersfield visiting family and then was going to back track thru Tehachapi to the 14 to 395. I know it would probably be closes to go thru Lake Isabela and over Walker Pass but I'm not a big fan of driving the canyon.
Any suggestions would be appreciated
Ray

Ray,
OK. Perfectly clear now. Like I said we will be going that route in Sept.. I like going that way because I get so tired of the same old thing on I-5.

Agree on 395. Pretty drive and not difficult. We pulled into a place on the west side to see what it is and found out it was a Japanese Internment camp from WWII. Unfortunately we were too early in the morning and the museum was not open but we still read the plaques and looked at the various buildings and remaining entrance station.

Hey Ray,
Did you end up going up 395? How did you like it? Where did you stay? Gosh I'm just full of questions aren't I?
Hope you are enjoying the OR Coast as much as we do! Only a few more days until we hit the road headed back up to the OR Coast.
Travel safely,
Dennis and Mary Kay
