Slide Toppers
We have a new 3160 that did not come with slide toppers. We have not had them on our past two rigs but my husband thinks it might be a good idea on this one. They're a hefty investment so I was wondering if they are worth the money. Thoughts?

You will get both sides of the answer here. My input is they keep stuff off the top of the slideout, they provide a shade that allows the roof of the slideout to remain cooler, they shade the top seal so its life is greatly extended, and they can, given enough wind, cause some noise if the wind direction is from the right direction. Would I be without them...no. john

I love them BUT even the newer one's make noise in the higher winds so you have to put up with that in a storm but other than that All upside for me

Like the others have said, I wouldn't be without them. Also it's nice when it's raining you don't bring in the water when you retract your slides especially the large one.

I've had them on some RVs and not had them on others. They have their good points and their bad points. If you get them, don't bring them in if camped under some trees before checking for limbs, pine cones, etc first.

I've had fivers with them and have current 3150RL without them. I sleep too light to tolerate them in the constant Kansas wind. I currently just carry a leaf blower with a gutter attachment and blow the slide tops off before retracting them.

Allways have had them, always will, for reasons stated above.

They do not do well in snow if you get caught in it.

been fulltiming for 6 years now and have been caught in snow many times in those years and never had a problem with the snow as the toppers are spring loaded and just bend down with the weight till they hit the top of the slide with no damage to the toppers and when I pack up and go I suck in the slides and the snow falls off ,Now if ya got 2-3 ft of the stuff ya might want to brush some off but other than that no big deal in my experience

I agree with above stated. For me I think they have more pros than cons, keeping water off my slides during heavy rain was a big plus. plus the effects
of the sun on the slide rooms rubber roof. just my 2 cents worth

I got caught in the snow without them. I had to get up on the camper and get it off as best I could before I could retract the slide.

Love mine, all six of them. The seventh is the large awning even though it covers the dining room slide. Nice to have both as I keep the big awning rolled up most times. I negotiated the purchase and installation into the sale of the unit. Worked out well for me. The shade and keeping the debris off the slide top were my big reasons for making them a deal breaker if they did not put them on.

Gee You must be lucky and not too much snow. It tends to freeze!! It will not just fall off but you may fall off the roof trying to get the toppers free so you can retract the slides.

We have them on ours and love them, our previous Montana didn't have them, had to brush the slides off all the time, now all the needles and other stuff just roll off when we bring slides in.

Yes I'm glad that I joined the forum, I too have been pondering the idea of having the toppers installed. After reading all the posts, experiencing not having toppers the past year, and having to climb my shaky extendable ladder with a leaf blower in hand to clean off the 6 slides, we're have the toppers installed next spring. Thanks all for helping me with the decision.

And like others, no problem with snow. Full timed one winter in Colorado Springs, and with plenty of snow, toppers were the least of our problems.

We had them on our last camper. We had them installed before we took it off the lot. Trust me when I say they are worth every penny. We don't have them on the new camper we purchased a month ago and wish we did - especially when I keep finding leaves & such on my carpet inside the camper that came in when the slides were pulled in. We will eventually put them on but with 4 slides it can be costly (our last camper had 1 slide ). One thing we will do differently however is get the toppers without the cover on them. We thought they would be best because the canvas would be protected from trees, etc. However we discovered that dirt got stuck in the covers. When we buy them for our Montana we'll get the ones without the covers. Hope this helps you.
