Rear of the pin box

Hello all. I remember reading on here about some folks that found a solution to this. I have a 2012 F-450 to pull my 5er with and need to be careful on sharp turns. I have a little over 6 inches of clearance between the bed rails and bottom of the trailer on level ground which I think is about right, but I really have to watch it if I am making a slow sharp turn. The rear of the pin box will come into contact with the plastic on top of the bed rails if I turn too sharp (even on level ground). I learned this the hard way with my last truck with the same amount of clearance and I chewed up a little part of the plastic on the bed cap with the rear of the pin box. I guess I have two options, raise the hitch a little bit (25K factory provided Reese Elite) or take an angle grinder and cut some of the metal off of the back of the pin box. I am a bit worried about cutting the pin box as far as lessening the strength of the pin box (ever so slightly). Thoughts? -Glenn

I asked the Mor ryde rep at the last fall rally, and he said as long as the only metal removed is up to the angle iron that the pin box is bolted to, it would be just fine. He said I should move the silver tag to another spot on the pin box. Haven't done it yet, but I have the same problem.

Thanks Bob! Time to buy a new cutting wheel for my grinder I guess because that is some pretty thick metal. -Glenn

This comes up often on another forum. Some have posted pictures of their pin boxes that had 90 degree corners at the lower rear that they had cut off a couple inches at about a 45 degree angle. From those pictures it did not appear it would have any effect on strength.

Thanks Bill, my pin box came with a 45 degree cut on both sides, it's just not enough of a cut to allow for clearance. I guess I need to make some changes. -Glenn

My pin box also had the angle corners but it was not enough. I cut off more metal and have not had any issues with it.
