First Trip / First breakdown

I have a 2013 mountaineer 290 and on our first trip out the electric landing gear jammed and would not retract. Is this a common problem? do I need to consider retrofitting a hydraulic system?

It's not unheard of on older units, or units where someone got carried away with the hitch latch test, but I've not heard of one on a new unit.

Could you have extended it too far?

How would I know if it extended to far? I would assume that it would stop when fully extended. No?

Our jacks failed on our first trip in our 2010 . Lippert paid a local mobile repairman to come to where we were and replace both. No further troubles.

We did that to ours the first time we took our rig out. Broke the pin. We marked the legs to a stop off point with black paint. We just raise the legs to the black mark and stop. FYI

Yes you can extend them too much, you can also retract them too much. If you hear a clunking you've gone too far.

....or perhaps you blew the landing gear in-line fuse???? After the first time that I popped that fuse, I replaced it with a self resetting breaker.

On ours, it was not over extension, but the holes thru the up shaft where the shear pins pass thru were drilled too large and the top of both shaft broke off precisely at that point.

JLH ... assuming you may be a bit new to this .. if not, my apologies ... there are no limit switches on anything on your fiver save your hot water heater and furnace. Like said, you can go too far up or down. Where the paint lines on the bottom of your legs is gives you a good guide for retract ... extend like said you'll hear popping. The leg extensions are 21" long (maybe 18" usable) to give you an idea of what you have to work with. I might also add when extending and retracting your slides, as soon as the last slide initially stops moving either in or out ... let up on the button. Holding it in for another 10 seconds or so will do no good other than building up a boatload of pressure.
