Sam's Club for Full Timers?

Joyce and I have never belonged to Sam's Club because we lived too far away from any of them. Now that we full time we get near them occasionally. We visited one when we were in Goshen and found the items were good and the deals were good but we didn't think we could take advantage of much due to lack of storage space. We do belong to Good Sam so we can get a discount on the membership, but I wondered if full timers or long termers were using them and if so how do you deal with the buying in bulk situation.

Sharon and I don't use them because of the quantities you have to purchase.

That would make sense.

We use Sam's Club often. If frozen goods are involved, we have a 5 cf freezer that we run totally off solar. We can store enough to last a couple of weeks. This summer, though, instead of using Sam's club (which was over 30 miles from where we were camp hosts) we used Schwan's. They delivered right to our door and although they are a little more expensive, the difference was more than made up in the fuel costs we saved. And we could place our orders on line. Handy!

So, Sam's Club, CostCo, Schwan's---just different options with each having its good and bad parts.

Were members of Costco for years. When we started traveling, we switched to Sam's Club because they have more stores.

Sam's definitely, as a matter of fact, I stopped there last night on the way home and bought a cooked chicken right off that rotating cooker they have in the meat department. Got a package of lunch meat for on-the-road Sammie's and some Panera soup.
All they have there is not in big quantities, I remember discussing with Sue on whether we would ever buy enough to cover the membership fees. Ha! I think our first purchase was $200. I buy my fuel there exclusively when home. Great fuel discount for members.

Ozz,

The secret to shopping at Sam's Club to to NOT take a basket in with you. I costs me $200 every time I grab a basket. Just load up Sue's arms with what you need and you can get away with only $100.

Great advice! also, don't go in there hungry...
Oh, and I re-read Dicks opening post, I guess I am not a full-timer, so apoligies offered, just an part/long-timer I guess.

Sam's Club works well for us, especially while wintering in Florida. We make purchases and share with other friends within the RV park. Everyone saves and storage is not quite an issue.

Thanks Folks! I think we got the answers we need. It's 32 miles to the nearest one from where we'll be spending the winter, but it's 30 miles to most things. I'll set us up in Albuquerque while Joyce is painting the mural.

We quit Sam's Club a few years ago while in our stick house, just after our son left home to make his mark on the world. We could no longer justify buying in those quantities for two people.

Does Sam's Club sell diesel? I haven't found a Costo yet that does. I like Costco BTW.

Send a message via MSN to grayghost03
Our local Sams sells diesel, usually the cheapest in town.

I'm looking at tires, diesel and batteries mostly. Food, I know will be a hit and miss thing. On the other hand we have continued to buy smaller quantities from Omaha Steaks so I know we have the freezer space for the occasional food trip.

We love Costco but they do not have one near us in Florida so we go to Sam's..I buy the large packages of good ground beef, pork chops, chicken breasts, and salmon. Each package makes about 5 meals for the two of us. I put them in one qt freezer bags and they fit nice and flat in our freezer (we have the double door). That is about 20 meals for us with leftovers for under $50.00... We also use the Keurig coffee pods that come 80 in a box for about $40.00 compared to over 75 cents each in the other stores.. When we go with other's in the park, we sometimes buy things and share.. We also use the gas station. It is well worth the membership dues for us even though we only go there about once every two months.

Ed, where have you seen Costco sell Diesel? I have never seen a station, especially around the Puget Sound area sell Diesel. I'm looking forward to finding some.

In our travels, and we are not full time, we found there are more Sam's that Costco's out there, also a lot of Sam's sell Diesel at a good price, so that should give you one more thing to think about
