Ruh-ro...

I'm sure most of you have seen these roadway signs - No Hazardous Cargo. I know it includes propane, but what do you do when traveling through Boston and "Stella", our GPS, named such because I sometimes yell at it, directs us to Sumner Tunnel and just before it's too late, we both see the 12' 6" height sign (we're 13' 3")? Well, you suck it up and look for a truck route.

We found one, but it wound us around to take one of two options - Sumner Tunnel, again, or 13' 6" height restrictions (okay for us), but no hazardous cargo! We took option number two.

We dutifully pulled up to the toll booth, paid our toll and were about to depart when the collector inquired what our rig was. In fact, he asked: "Whattya got in there? Horses?". No, I replied, it's a camper. Uh oh..."You got propane?" Yup, we replied.

With no place to go and no propane allowed in the tunnels, we were told to wait by the side of the highway for the State Police who would escort us through the tunnel. We waited about 5 minutes, and sure enough, here comes a trooper who asked us why we were in the predicament we found ourselves in. I explained and he amicably told us to follow him after a very mild admonishment by telling us we should have taken route such and such.

We followed, and he took us through one tunnel, but exited before the next ones and took us through various streets and turns to get us on I-93; he had his lights on and people did wonder why we were following!

As my grandmother often says, "it was an adventure!"

Ya got to grin. Their signs and routing are not very clear. I bet they get one a day. Glad you are safe and no ticket.

It's always better to have the police escorting in front of you than to have them behind you pulling you over. It could have been worse.

Now you need to get one of those Hazardous Materials signs.

Great story!!! Glad it ended well. What an adventure. We got to pull over and turn LP off before a tunnel...Chesapeake Bay, maybe?!

I had a police escort once, but it was to the Police Station not through a tunnel.

Probably being a retired LEO helped when you opened your wallet with the badge and license! Quite a story. Memories are piling up for you.

Welcome to MA!! We don't believe in effective signage. The signs are outside of the city on electronic signs that are often used for other informational messages. They usually don't even tell you that it is Boston tunnels that will be an issue. Most of the time it is "Hardious Cargo use 95 North". You may remember 95 North as your GPS will tell you that you are getting on 95 North, 93 South, and 128 north at the same time!

I use the avoid part of route function and ask to avoid Boston. It will add about 10 minutes going north but will route you around the city on 95 North (Which Locals call 128 North).

I hope you had a great time once you made it to your destination.

Ma is a great state but they do not know how to put up signs so people can follow them, or they just plain do not put any up. It is a great puzzle when you travel there. That said, it is still a Great State to visit. A lot of history. You find what they taught you in school isn't exctly the way it was. School history has a tendency to fudge the stories a little bit. Have a Good Day
