Bridgestone / Firestone ?

Looking into new tires for the rig. After reading a ton of posts here, I had it narrowed down to Michelin xps ribs and bridgestone duravis. I went to a tire guy I really trust, and he said the Michelins were junk due to dry rot and that I should go with a firestone (don't remember the model) that was actually the same as the bridgestone....said bridgestone makes the firestones.

I've been a die hard Michelin fan on my trucks forever, so I was a little taken aback about his dry rot comments. G614's are out as I have 80# rims.

Thoughts ?
Thanks in advance.

Bill, don't have any real experience with Michelins, but while camping with friends recently he said when he was looking for tires for their MH a tire guy he normally uses told him the same thing. Don't really know as many here on the forum use Michelin and don't seem to have a problem. The Firestones were probably the Transforce series.

Maxis and Bridgestone get good press here and on other forums. I haven't had Firestones since my car had two separations running Firestone wide ovals when I was a kid so I haven't even paid attention to what's been said. I haven't heard that on the M's, but it would be interesting to know how many members on the forum are running them on the rig. M's are great on the TV, but dry rot isn't a problem on a TV.

Bridgestone Duravis R250 weigh 59 lbs. rated to 3042lbs All steel construction.

BF Goodrich Commercial T/A weigh 45 lbs. rated to 3042lbs

Firestone Transforce HT weigh 40 lbs. rated to 3043lbs. twin steel belts polyester cord body

Goodyear G614 RST's weigh 58 lbs. rated to 3750lbs All steel construction

I currently have Maxxis 235/80/16E on our 3150rl
and I am happy with them. I was planning on
buying 2 while travelling through British Columbia and
Washington, because Alberta currently doesn't
have any Maxxis Dealers. I must have stopped at 7 Maxxis Dealers
both in BC and Washington and everyone told
me they had to order them from Arizona or California.
Not one dealer had them on stock. I asked why they
didn't carry Maxxis in stock and the response was
that they are too expensive. Once my existing
Maxxis tires are near being worn out I think I'll
replace them with a good quality LT tire. It's too hard
to hard to find a dealer that carries Maxxis in
stock.

I just replaced my tires with the Firestone Transforce HT's at the end of June and have put on about 1600 miles. Am very happy with them.

I have the Firestone Transforce tires as well on our camper. We haven’t had any trouble with them since we put them on almost a year ago.

Wild Horse, if you are a die hard Michelin fan check out the BF Goodrich that are mentioned. Michelin owns BF Goodrich. I have the rugged trails on my truck and am really pleased to the point I will use them again when the time comes.

I have heard the same thing about Michelins. But I have used them for years on the DW's vehicles and on my trucks and have never seen it happen. Tires wore out before any significant cracking occured.
Put XPS Ribs on the trailer a little over 4 yrs ago and they still look new.
I don't plan to change my choices.

On my last truck I had Michelins and yes they looked very dry rotted long before the tread wore out. I was worried bout them and was glad to sell the truck. That being said I did put Michelin LTX M-S2's on the trailer now and have BFG's on the truck. So we will see if newer Michelins will dry rot or not. I am in a prime location to test that with the Texas sun.
PS check back in 3-4 years and I will let you know how they are doing

Pay attention to the weight of the tires it's a good indication of reserve capacity.

Bill,
I had BF Goodrich Commercial TA's on my truck and trailer with vert good results. Michelin ownes Goodrich and just recently had a recall on tires manufactured within a two year period for possible tread separation. They found 142 failures in 810,000 tires and has a recall on all tires made in that period. My tires fell within that period and Michelin put 10 new Michelin LTX's on my truck and trailer for free. Several of us have done that.

That dry rot thing about the Michelin tires is news to me. I've been running Michelins for longer than I can rememmber on the tow vehicle and have never, ever, heard that before. Is it possible someone just happened to get a bad tire or were people who think that just because a tire has a lot of tread it is therefore a good tire? I've seen tires with a tread depth of 11/32" that really looked good but when you check the manufactured date you find out they are 11 years old. I wouldn't put a lot of stock in what one individual might say. Listen to what many say and then make your own, educated decision. We have the Bridgestone Duravis 250 on our Montana.

Incidentally, I used to be a forever Goodyear customer until I happened to find out that I was able to get three times the mileage from Michelin tires.

You can add Bridgestone Duravis 500s to the list...a step up from the 250s, recommended by Lonnie the tire guru.

"Michelin's were junk due to dry rot"
Balderdash!
From my experience, having nothing but Michelin's on my service trucks from 1976 to today.. I dispute that statement.
Any time someone gives a sweeping general statement like that, would make me question his reliability as a any kind of expert.
Lonnie, my personal expert, had Michelin's on his list of good tires to buy.
I went with the G14's on the Monte and have the non-dry rot Michelin's on the truck.
My suggestion would be the G-14's as long as the wheels are up to the task.
From your post, I think you are on the same page, good luck with the choice, we all want reliability under us on the road.
