Water Heater Check Valve

Did some searching on the forum, but still cannot figure out what the check valve from cold water side into HWH looks like. I think ours is making a terrible racket.

I've got access to the HWH, but don't see anything that looks like a valve. Any help would be appreciated.

Its called a backflow preventer, and it looks like the one in the link below. Most RV dealers will have them in stock. They may be brass like this one, or "plastic" like mine was in a previous travel trailer. It is normally right at the inlet to the water heater, and it can easily be replaced once you have access to the back of the hot water heater. The one in the link below is sold by Camco.

When I was reading various posts on this forum, I thought the check-valve is supposed to be on the inlet side? But mine, now that I know what it looks like, is on the outlet side - hot side. Is this correct?

Yes, I think that's right. Also be sure to look at the arrows showing direction of flow when you replace it.

yes you want it on the hot water out side. The cold goes in the bottom and hot out the top. If you put a "T" valve on the cold side and a "T" just past the check valve that will prevent cold water from going back into the hot water heater when the T valve is in the heater bypass position.
