Window shades or mini blinds?

Just wondering with everyone says that the day/night shades are such a pain to use (tear easily), why not purchase mini blinds or room darkening shades?

We have had both (mini blinds in previous units). They break also, especially the wands. Plus they are a bear to keep clean. Even though the shades are a bit of a hassle (I don't think it is as far as pain), I much prefer them to the mini blinds. I like the day/night feature because you can have just the day ones down and still have a lot of light in the unit. JMHO

We have been putting our day night shades up and down for nearly 3 years and have yet to have a problem. No broken strings, no strings coming undone and no tearing so our vote goes for the day/night shades that came with the rig.

We love the d/n shades as compared to the miniblinds. Had the blinds on a TT...always falling down, breaking, banging on the road and very difficult to keep clean.

Day/night shades are our choice too, after all the units we have had.

We've just had a string break in the shade/blind on the rear window. We live in Victoria, BC and need to put the night blinds down to keep things warmer in here. Has anyone had this happen to the? How did you fix it? Was it expensive?

Thanks for any help!

A couple months ago someone put up a very good repair guide on the daynight shades complete with pictures. I was expecting to find it in the members show and tell page (found by clicking home on the front page - scroll down on left), but was unable to locate it for you.
Hopefully, someone else remembers and can post a link.

We never had a shade fail or tear in our 2003, but I read all kinds of problems with tearing and broken cords on the new ones. Did keystone change manufacturers of the day/night shades?

We haven't had any string breakage etc., but it bugs me that when the shade is down and it is not level. Is it normal for the shades to act this way I had them adjusted when I had the 5er in for service and it still the pleats don't look level. It seems if you move the bottom bar horizontally it seems a little better. I don't to make a pin cushion out of the wall where the strings attaches to the wall. Am I being too picky

Have not had any problems with the shades. Had a few broken rods with the blinds.

First, remember that you only hear of the failures or problems. If we have 10 or 20 out of 2500 members who report or discuss a specific problem, that is still a very small percentage.

For ourselves, we prefer the day/night shades, for reasons noted by others above. We had a cord fray on a large shade, and replaced the cord per the info and pictures provided by one of our Forum members a few months ago. Took about an hour, went fairly easily.

I think many of the problems with the cords encountered by Forum members can be traced to improper adjustment of the tension on the cords. We had to loosen several of ours; they were almost banjo-tight. They need to be tight enough to keep the shades in position when part way up or down, but not too much more.

I found the Re-stringing site that was mentioned earlier.

John Cocking (OntMont) put together this slide show / instructions.

My wife used to complain quite a bit about the day/night shades - especially how difficult they were to move up and down. After watching her I noticed the problem.

Typically she would simply push them up, or pull them down. She was not aware there were such things as knobs and other window projections behind the shades (typically hidden by the side curtains. When the lower metal potions of the day and night shades came into contact with one of the projections, thus stopping the adjustment, she would just push and pull harder.

After showing her that she needed to pull the shades slightly toward her and away from these projections, she quickly became much happier with the shades, and I haven't had to repair one since.
