Didn't think it would make that much difference
With the heat and heat indexes we've been dealing with lately I finally decided to do something about the vents under the stairs. Diesel Guy did it the right way and that's what kept me from doing it. Whenever I've got the time and thinking about it, it's too darn hot to open things up and do that much work. On a post yesterday someone mentioned putting cardboard over the vents and that got me thinking. We cut black foam board to fit and put it in this morning. The bedroom AC actually took some time off today, neither unit went to high fan and we stayed three degrees cooler than yesterday. Top that with the black foam doesn't show and it's been a big winner.

Curious what temp you end up with in the basement (over outside/inside). My charger/inverter is down there and while I'd like to get better cooling in the living area i don't want to fry a $2k inverter.

I have been running this setup every Summer for years. I would say the basement is a few degrees cooler than outside temperature as some air still gets into the basement. I can always tell when I open the basement storage door and my glasses fog up at the beach. But it's nothing like what it was when I had the step vents open.

Shouldn't be a problem, cool air leaks down there anyway. My six batteries, my inverter and both solar controllers are in the front compartment where the level-up goes. No heating or air there but they're doing ok.

This is what I've been telling you guys and gals ... our units with the dropped front frame have a straight shot from your living area, into the storage area, and on out the belly pan since it's far from air tight. Before I insulated it up on a windy day in Kansas ... with everything shut up I still could feel hot air wafting in from under the steps and from behind the big wooden grill under my fridge (3150RL models). There's no need to worry about convert or inverter cooling as there's still lotsa air available to cool them.

Yepper, we put 1" Styrofoam board in between the steps after taking the slotted covers off. It has helped the A/C out tremendously. We only have one A/C unit and today it reached 93 here and the unit stayed at 72 inside.
We also use the insulated pillows that fit in the fantastic fan openings.

We're getting ready to head out tomorrow for another nine week junket. Think I'm going to bring some cardboard along and try this out.

I use 1/4"plywood I stained to match. Can't even notice it and it works great.

We did that with both our Montana's a long time ago. We are never in those brutal temps for very long in fact the hottest temps we are usually in are right here in Ohio and we are usually not living in the Montana when it is that hot. We manage to keep the Montana located to where the A/C and the Furnace are not used that much.
