New bed, platform and lifts
We finally decided to get a new mattress, a platform, then new lifts.
The OEM platform was a work of art, excuse me while I get sick, not even shop grade plywood it was C grade I don't think they make D grade plywood. but that's what this looked like.
I went to my supplier and got 2 sheets of Baltic Birch 1/2 inch plywood A/B grade, its 5 feet x 5 feet the mattress is 5 foot wide and 79 inches long. I made the board 58 inches by 78 inches 5 inches longer than the original, we never were able to tuck the sheets under the old mattress because the wood was too short. I used a piano hinge instead of the two Keystone installed I installed some boards underneath across for rigidity.
I also purchased new gas assist lifts from 80 lbs. to 120 lbs. the original lifts never could stay up so a stick was always used.
I have 1 and a half inches between the new platform and the drawers.
I then put the new mattress on and let it expand. as you can see in the picture it butts right up to the drawer fronts, they will never open while were driving down the road.
It was a good project and it has improved the bed room along with our sleeping on Memory foam.
ON EDIT:
I just wanted to post some pictures of the slide working parts and frame work for those that have never seen what it looks like under there mattress slide. there might be some changes in the newer units but the basics are the same. I did ask Keystone if I could put Lithium grease on the slide bars because the system is sealed from dirt and the weather and received a OK.

Now that is what I wish our new 3160 RL LE looked like under the bed. Our is a real weird setup as I really think they use the same frame work for both queen and king size beds. Looks like CDX plywood was used in our unit. It lifts like yours with the gas struts and if I remember correctly it is smaller compartment toward the foot of the bed and then has a separate hatch and compartment closest to the window. Ours also buts up against the drawers like yours. Maybe when I pick it up Wednesday afternoon I will refresh my memory.

Where did you get the 120lb struts? My mattress will not stay up on its own. Plus my wife can not even lift it.

Jim I picked up the lifts at the RV store by me they had a large selection to choose from the cost was around 16.00 each. another place to look is PEP Boys.

We had to do the same thing, but I used 100# struts instead of 120#. Another member had 120 and was a little difficult to close. 100 seem to be the correct pressure.

Sounds like the same person did my lifting platform, except the side next to the closet was shaped like a giant open mouth waiting to eat anything on that side. Great job...I also used birch ply And replaced the struts with 100# units. John

Nice work Don! We got a different rig and it came with a king bed in it but we wanted a queen so we had them cut the bed down but they didn't take enough off the sides and we kept scrapping our legs when we got our of bed with the queen mattress on it so we took it back to the dealer and they cut it down more. I do have to put heavier struts on the bed since we bought a Serta mattress and it is a whole lot heavier than the cheap mattresses that come with the units. Just another mod to do when I find the time! We kind of miss the old 2980 though!

Scott I probably could have got away with 100 also but I didn't want to make a trip back to the RV store and exchange them, the new mattress is much heavier than the original. we just push down a bit harder and it takes a trip down.
Rondo ouch! I'm glad you were able to get it sawed down.
I did encounter a slight bit of a problem of sliding mattress on the smooth wood though, I will go to Bed Bath and Beyond and buy one of those rubber mats that you put under a floor rug to prevent sliding that should solve the sliding problem.
My Monty is 11 years old now and replacing the mattress support gave me the opportunity to inspect the slid mechanism for any wear. all was good.

I would worry a little about that non slide mat. Don't know how you go about making the bed but we have found that if you slide the mattress back from the headboard its easier to put the fitted sheet on mattress, we then slide it back up.

I never thought about that Dave its a good point to bring up about making the bed I'll bring that up to the wife, she will probably agree with you when putting on the fitted sheets, OH Dave the picture is with the slide closed right now, when open we can walk behind it very well.
