Can't wait for retirement

Today was Customer Appreciation Day at the store and now that it's done I know why we can't wait to retire. We're an odd Dairy Queen in that over 70% of our business is in food with the other 30% divided between Ice Cream and Orange Julius. On the 1st we always appreciate the customers who've helped us stay open another year with 1/2 off of all baskets and Blizzards. It's very much like riding with Custer. First there's the fun of talking about how you're going to kick Indian butt and then you see how many Indians there really are! I hope next year we're kicked back in the Monty someplace warm empathizing with our daughter when she's telling us about it on the phone.

I retired January 1, 2007. A short time later, a friend called me up and asked if I went through any depression after leaving my working life behind. I thought about it for a moment and then replied, yes - I did. I told him I was depressed that I couldn't have done it 10 years earlier! Good Luck!

I gave the day to day drudgery to my son of running the family business. I'm to young for medicare so my wife works for health insurance for a few more years or whenever affordable health care becomes a reality. Anybody have any secrets to share on the health care question? What are you going to do, Dick.

Retirement is great. We are also to young for medicare. I'm 60 wife is 55, both been healthy all our lives just taking a chance. How many people are unemployed and have no insurance.

Retirement is wonderful. I was burned out when I gave my son our family business. My wife was burned out when she left the school system. We are not fulltimers but we do go at our leisure and enjoy it more and more. Only thing that depresses me is DW does not want to sell "stick" and go fulltime. Larry

You have no idea how much I cringed when I read your post. One even relatively minor event could wipe out any money you think you are saving and a more serious event take everything you own. No, I'm not an insurance salesman, but at the very least, I highly recommend you both enroll in some kind of cataclysmic coverage.

There are some caveats on us turning the business over to our daughter. First we get to continue with the Blue Cross for $25 per week like all the other full time employees (we'll come back and help her in the summer, but the rest of the time we're still on the Board of Directors) until we both qualify for medicare. Second she has to buy the business from us at a greatly reduced cost. Third, as consultants and members of the Board we will get a salary to cover the Blue Cross. From my point of view, if I didn't have the health insurance figured out there wouldn't be a chance of retirement.

I have been retired 12 years after spending 30 years in law enforcement. Retired at 60 and am 72 now and am have the best days of my life. Father passed away at 100 years old and I am shooting at that number. Grandson is 13 and 6 ft tall and loves to hunt with me. I look around at a lot of people and thank god for what I have and how lucky I have been. Wife just turned 65 and has been driving school bus for 18 years and I am trying to get her to retire. I have full medical with my retirement so things are good. Wishing the best to all you "Old Folks". On a side note I had a check up with my doctor a while back and when he said everything looked good did I have any questions I asked him what to do with a 72 year old body and a 25 year old mind and he said That was a problem.

Both DW and I have what they call “preexisting conditions”. We take migraine medicine like 50 million other people. Premiums approach $1500 per month as we don't qualify for the lower premium high deductible policys. I would not go without any insurance. My dad is 85 and works at least 6 hours per day in his wood shop, so I guess I'll just wait it out. Or maybe ObamaCare will come to the rescue.
