Was the new valve built the same? Just wondering if there is a better valve out there it might be worth replacing mine now to avoid pushing those plastic parts through the system if the current one fails.

OZZ, if the valve is on the outlet, which undoubtedly it is (tag on insulation), how does that plastic get back in the tank. Hot outlet=flow out of tank. Any chance that plastic came from something else? Am I missing something here?

SW, you get the Boobie prize!
The Black plastic is a wild card. Some assembler along the Water heater/trailer assembly line had a case of: I do not give a ....whatever... and introduced plastic into the tank. I, being the lucky recipient of said tank, got the plastic.
Chicken and Egg.
Maybe the plastic introduced enough resistance, to pop the winged retainer off of the plunger stem.
Pi** poor construction on the check valve in my humble onion, the stem should have retained the retainer.
As for a better valve..... Watts has my vote. BUT, I imagine competition has eroded their brand as well.
Can't give a gold star to any brand.
If a guy were to take apart the original check valve, super glue the winged retainer on the stem, it would probably last 10 years.
The new one I installed, does not allow access to the stem, maybe a better mousetrap, maybe not. I have my super glued original in stock, in case of failure of the new part.
You guys and gals probably think I am an odd fellow to give so much thought to a small problem, but remember:
Popeye; I yam what I yam.

I'm gonna take a guess here that the black plastic was a temporary plug in the water heater inlet or outlet that some fool poked in the tank when attempting to remove it. That's about par for the workmanship I see in these rigs.
OZZ, I've got all kind of parts I have removed. Never know when you're gonna need 'em. In fact, back at the stick house, the barn is crammed full of things like that.
