hanging closet rod
While returning from FL to upstate NY April 07, found all clothes on floor in a heap. The 5/8" sheet metel screws on the center bracket pulled out of the wood above. Had to install 1/4' bolts (which is all i had) on the road. Check if yours are sufficient to carry the weight.

We also suffered the same "isolated incident" where the screws on the right side of the closet (3400) tore out of the flimsy wood they were attached to. We re enforced by installing a wood backing on the inside of the TV encloser a better support and longer screws.

Ours broke the first year out full timing (2000). Rebuilt it myself and it has lasted all this time. Too many dresses!

Should have said "clothes" rather than dresses. Marge only has a couple full dresses.

We also had the same problem with our 07 Mountaineer, this is a problem Keystone has to address. I repaired it myself, not fun as you can see with the pic's.

Just what is it people have done to reinforce the closet rod? Just add a piece of wood to strengthen the attachment at the right end of the rod behind the TV? Anything else? It looks like Larry's rod also failed at the center bracket. If so, what's the fix there?

In our 06 3400 it pulled out of the wall on the right side by the Tv..it is just screwed into that very thin wall board..really poor design. It bent the rod at the point where it pulled out of top of the closet as shown in the picture. It appearers to be firmly attached everywhere BUT that right side. I doubt that any "reputable engineer' would design anything like that.."cost effective" is the designers worst nightmare.

The repair job wasn't as hard as getting all the clothes out and put on the bed, to get at the repair job. We cut some 1" x 2" and put on top of the shelf with screw's from the top and bottom. Then straightened the rod and it turned out OK, we have traveled about 800 miles since the repair and is holding up great.

Well, I took all the clothes out of the closet today for our trip to the dealer tomorrow for some warranty issues. I know DW has too many clothes, but I think the rod is a little flimsy. I will be looking at ways to strengthen the structure. They depend too much on screws holding in the engineered wood and cardboard paneling they use. I would like to be able to run screws into the aluminum studs, but I'm not sure I can locate them. This is not one of the things on my list, as I feel sure they would just run more screws in the shelf and brackets.

Our Rod fell in our closet for the washer/dryer. I went to the hardware store and bought 2 pipe stand supports, the flat round type that has a threaded hole in the middle for the pipe and 4 holes for mounting. They are cast metal and with 4 screws holding each the rod is quite sturdy now.

Just lost my closet rod on my 2005 2980 traveling from the west cast to the east coast. The potholes are terrible on I-90 & I-80. Bridges are the worst I have seen. The truck & the RV took a pounding. I was not surprised to see something give. It is really inconvenient when some thing like this breaks when you are on the road. The passenger side wall bracket cracked, causing the next shelf bracket to pull out, and the rod bent at the next bracket. I realize Keystone is not responsible for the road conditions, but I would think they would anticipate this issue and design a better support system. I purchased two electrical conduit hanging brackets and fastened them on each end of the rod and into the shelf after I laid in 1" X 3" boards, bought new wall brackets that were near impossible to find with a 1" opening. I also put 1/2" aluminum conduit inside the existing rod and wrapped some tape around the aluminum pipe in several areas to makeup for the different size. I am not confident that the problem is really solved, so before I hit the road I plan to make some wood braces to prop up the rod when I am on the road. Seems Keystone could run wood braces down each wall to the floor to add support to the ends of the rod and one in the center fastened to the shelf and the floor, a project I plan to do when I get home in Oct.

Mine pulled out of the wall on our 3400 a long time ago without the help of bumpy roads. We ran a wood brace on the other side of the wall for support and installed a better beacket.. so simple wonder why Montana did not think of it??

If the factory would mount the rods so they screw into the aluminum frame the problem would be solved. The idea of that thin panneling holding anything is rediculous.

Ditto with the rod on our 2007 3400. What I did was to cut two plaes from 1/2 inch plywood for each end to match curves, with slots for the rod to fit in, etc and the glued and screwed them to the walls in the proper places, and then put in 1/4 inch by 1 1/2 inch screws into the center portion of the shelf where the support is. This, by the way is where the rod initally fails, because of those ridiculous little 5/8 screws tha keystone puts in. it puts a bend in the rod and pull it out of the end support at one end or the other.
Anyway, to make a long story short it works great! 2000 mile trip through construction, bad roads etc. and no problems with the rod.

Ours failed at the center screws in the '03 2850 after about a year and Jack had to rebuild. Now in the '08 3400 it failed after one month, again center screws - Jack put in longer screws. So far so good but have been sitting here in PA for 2 months - getting ready to hit the road again soon. The rod looks a bit bowed and will replace at home. Worst thing is taking all clothes out and replacing.
Safe travels.

I realize this is an old post but I did some looking for the issue you have all noted above. We had the Center bracket (screws in 1/4” plywood , REALLY). The rod bent and everything ended up on the floor. Now on closer inspection you can see the the end brackets aren’t much better. I will reinforce all 3 spots when we get home. You do need to be a handy diy person when owning an RV.
Thanks for the insights and solutions shared.
