I tow a HC331 with a short bed Ram using an Andersen Ultimate Hitch Once had it almost 90 degrees without TV or trailer damage. Do not like to do this due to side pressure but once in a while you are in a situation that requires it

HC 331 rl

I pull our 2018.5 with a ford F250 SB CC 6.7. we use a pullrighr superlight 20k ball hitch and do not have any problems making any turns, or backing up.

We pull our 3811 Montana with a Chevy 2500 HD Duramax. Mine is a 2015 and in the new models they have increased the capacities. Engine brake is essential in the hills and mountains so you can slow down. I agree with another poster and STOPPING is what you should worry about. ANY truck can pull it. Even a 1/2 ton will pull it. Not well or safely but it can pull it. Won't stop it though. Happy shopping.

Welcome to the group, I am not going to get into the 3/4 or 1 ton, short vs long bed and SRW vs DRW. Any of these can pull your 5er without issue, I have a 2018.5 HC330RL and a 2017 F350 SD CC LB DRW. We weighed it all and the 330RL was 13440lbs loaded, with a pin weight of 3720lbs. We had a 2500 Chevy SB and a Demco auto slide before we got the new camper, I hated how big and heavy (300lbs) the hitch was and the lack of cargo space. I don’t know how much cargo the truck you are looking at can carry but my buddy has 2017 350 SB CC SB rated for 3674lbs so it would be overloaded with no one driver, passengers or cargo. This why we upgraded our tow rig before the new trailer. Good luck and safe travels!

I wouldn’t want to be the guy I saw last week at the truck stop... F250 pulling a toy hauler, looks like a bit of sag to me.

Short bed

We tow with a 2016 standard 6’ bed, 1 ton Chev Duramax and use a slider hitch. after getting in a few tight spots we are so glad we went with the Demco auto slider 18K. While it is large I would not own another one as it works awesome.
Also would not tow with a 3/4 ton anymore, been towing and hauling campers for 30 plus years with 3/4 tons but the last 13 with a 1 ton and would not go back.

Webrider, I think your weights are way off. Keystone figures total weight limit of 200 lb less than you stated and 1500 less pin weight. That is a lot of extra pin weight!!!

Hi, just bought a 331rl a month ago and have only had it out twice (7 hours each way to Tulsa and an hour over to the dealer for warranty work). We LOVE it! It's a really well thought out and built RV.


We already owned a 2011 Ram 3500 quad cab, dually, long bed. It barely notices the 5th wheel back there. Stops on a dime (soccer mom pulled out in front of us) and accelerates into rush hour traffic. Yes, a long bed and a dually are big and take a bit more thought when driving around town. But the tow mirrors stick out farther than the wheelwells so it's not that big of an issue. I wouldn't trade the stability, braking, power, load capacity or piece of mind for something that's a little bit easier to park. Just my opinion.

This is the info on our 330RL. BTW I put the wrong TV numbers in my previous post.

The advertised weights are:
GVWR 14260
CC 3065
UVW 11195
Pin 2265, 16%

My RV’s numbers:
GW 14260
CC 2980
UVW 11220
Pin ? Didn’t weigh empty, should have

Weighed numbers no water:
GW 13280
Cargo 2060
Pin 3020, 23%

Using my numbers: 14260GVWR - 13280GW = 980lbs is less than the max GVWR.

Correction to my post, I put the wrong TV info into my calculations, my RV GW is 13280 and the pin is 3020. So my buddies 350 would have 654lbs left for hitch, cargo and passengers.

Long bed vs short bed

I dented a cab with an older trailer but with the new trailer, I can back into the tightest of spots. Most new trailers, if not all, are rated for 90 deg turns. My current truck is a 3500, SRW, short bed, it has the GM factory hitch mount with no slide and it does a great job pulling and backing up a 12,000lb 5er

we have a RAM2500, 4X4, 6.7 diesel, 6 forward speed, w/jake brake that pulls,
& stops, a 3160RL with no problem. RAM has a 6 ft bed with PullRite sliding hitch & TransFlow 50 gal. auxiliary fuel tank. Not much room left in bed to haul anything and parking in compact car slots are challenging.

I have a 2013 F250 6.7l diesel and tow a 2016 3402RL and absolutely love it. It is a short box and with a slider hitch I have no problems. The 6.7 is a real beast of an engine and will to your 5ver like it isn't even there.

Very respectfully, if you have not owned both a 3/4 and 1ton or SRW and DRW. What qualifies you to compare the two???

I have owned and towed the same loads with both. There is a big difference that I could readily feel between them even with a lighter and shorter Moutaineer I used to own. With all due respect, actual experience trumps opinion!

I've pulled the same sunset trail with a 2015 Colorado, a 1/2 ton Chevy, a 2500hd Duramax crew cab, and now with the new Ram crew cab dually I just bought in preparation for buying a fifth wheel.

We were taking the sunset trail to the dealer Wednesday for the trade in and a semi passed us. My wife said "did you see that"? I said see what. She said the truck and trailer didn't move! All the rest of them pushed and pulled. I call it suck and blow.

She said I wish you would have bought this truck a long time ago.

Yep that’s our experience too. Simply no comparison between our previous trucks and the one ton dually

I understand if someone has a really good reason to go shortbed, 3/4 ton or SRW. But no one can convince me that they are better suited for towing a big 5er!

Just went through this

In April we purchased a High Country 331RL and then looked for a vehicle to tow it. Finally in May we found a 2016 Ford F350 Diesel 6.7 Power Stroke. We had on hold an F250, but when we told the service guy at the place we bought the 5th wheel, well, his head almost exploded! lol. Long story short, we got the truck, added "The Patriot 18K sliding hitch by BW. The slide is a must because of the short bed and didn't want to chance the trailer going through our back window. So far, so great. It might be overkill, but we feel very confident and secure with this arrangement. Good luck and safe, happy travels

you could go with any truck that is diesel. a 3/4, one ton, dual or single wheel.
my recommendation is BUT IF you are going to use this truck for more than just pulling the trailer go with a 3/4 short box. and for sure not a dually.

I am writing to agree with you 100%. The 1 ton F350 is a comfortable beast when pulling the 5er. It's also used as our second vehicle for getting around, but I have trouble parking when doing errands around town. So glad we decided against a long bed.
