Making the Jump to Full Time

After years of wanting to try the full time lifestyle and travel our great country we are at the point in our life were it might just happen.
We have a buyer for the business and our home just went on the market today!!
Plan on hitting the road on September 1. Reservations are made for Pensacola FL for the month of December.
DW is anxious and hoping we can live away from the kids and grandkids for a year while we travel the east coast.

We have been married for 35 years now I guess it is time for us to see if we really like each other enough to travel the country in the Montana. Look forward to using a lot of the information gathered on this forum to make it work!!

Thanks To All of You

we're over 5 years now and wouldn't go back. Remember your rig has wheels. We couldn't go a year without time with the grandkids and great grandkid. Our rig has over 45,000 miles because we will come back to the center of the country every year no matter where we are and then we might go right back to where we left off.

Kids and grandkids grow older slower than you will. Now is the time to go and enjoy. Dick says it well, you can always schedule in a "greetings" visit...then go enjoy the country some more. John

We've been full-time for 3 years now. We, too, head back to the Midwest by the first of June, or close to it, so that we can catch up with the grandkids. There are many places in the Midwest, North, East and West during the June-December months, then back to the Gulf coast, TX or AZ for the winter. The grandkids are coming to us this year, which they are excited about. We're not afraid to pull anywhere, accept low clearance bridges, and we love our 40 feet of our home.

Enjoy. We are at almost 4 years and still having a great time. Remember, there is always Skype and FaceTime to use between visits, and the kids and grandkids like the grand parents being tech savey enough to use those to keep in touch.

Thanks for the advice and encouragement. The more work we put into the process the more excited we are getting. At some point we will just hope to get it over and move on with the next adventure of our life!!

We just made the jump May 20 and are on our first excursion to the Atlanta area. Here are some observations about our transition:
- Give the kids their "memory boxes" now and let them figure out what they want to do with that stuff.
- Sell what you can through a garage or estate sale. Our sale will fund about two years of travel expenses for us.
- Start now to figure out what your state of "residence" will be, and there are many pros and cons. States with no income tax tend to be high on vehicle registrations and personal property tax. The state will get their money somehow.
- Your RV insurance will change to more of a homeowner type policy and will likely be much more expensive than you've been paying as a recreational vehicle. State of residence will also affect this.
- For me, it was my addiction to tools. Couldn't bear to sell them, didn't have the room or weight to take them, and didn't want to burden/expect the kids to take care of them - so they went in storage. And now, just a few days into it, I sure wish I had my large woodworking clamps so I could repair this Montana end table that split the wood.
- You'll probably go rough growing pains of learning how to pack more stuff in your rig that will survive the road journey. We still are.
- There is A LOT of great advice on this forum.

We too are transitioning to full time. Retiring at the end of November and getting house ready for sale. Have sold off much of the furniture, will store some things for a year, and rest will go to goodwill. Removing grout from tile and need to paint the kitchen and replace the odeck. Work so many hours during the week that there is just not enough time to devote to working at home sometimes. I do have the opportunity to downgrade (postmaster at ringgold georgia) and saw a recent office open in roundup, montana. Many decisions to make. Enjoy your new adventure!
