Black Canyon of the Gunnison (CO)

We want to visit Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado. Can anybody recommend a nearby campground?

Thanks!

Jo-Anna,
We stayed at a small Forest Service campground in Cimarron which is about 10 miles East of the main entrance right on Hwy 50. Easy campground to get into and the spaces are sizable enough for the Montana. We thought it was a nice little park. Seniors with the Golden Age Pass pay half price. ($6-$7) They usually always have several spaces when we pass by there.

On Edit: Here is a photo showing part of the Narrow Gauge Train Display next to the entrance to the campground. The campground has no hookups. I don't remember if it has a dump station. It is not listed in our Campground Directory.

Jo-Anna,

There is also a commercial campground at Cimarron. It tends to fill up so it would probably be advisable to make reservations if this would work for you. (Black Canyon RV Park & Campground). There also is a State Park in Crawford.

Sorry I never camped there but I did rent a cabin out there for a week to archery Elk hunt a few years back. The scenery out there is awesome. Great place to rent some ATVs and get into some remote back country. Lots of trails to some very high elevation! Enjoy!

We spent three nights there last year on top at the South Rim Campground and I would highly recommend it. You are close to everything and we even had deer in our camp every day. They only have electric service up there but that was fine with us. Just make sure that you fill up with water before you go up. We filled up in Montrose at a truck stop on E Main Street and all we had to do was ask. If you really want a full service campground you will have to stay in town. But I recommend staying on top.
