Microwave/Convection Oven Danger?
I just read a thread on a SOB forum, where folks are finding heat damage behind the microwave/convection oven. Has anyone on here heard of anything similar on Montana's? The thread included pictures of burn/scorch marks on the wall behind the mw/cv, and one with melted wallpaper on the back of the mv/cv. I doubt there is a risk just using the mw, but we use the cv quit a bit. I guess it boils down (no pun intended) to whether it was installed with heat shielding and or air gap.

8 years of full timing and two rigs and hasn't been a problem yet. Many on the forum have replaced theirs and didn't mention it either. All of which doesn't mean it won't happen, particularly the way their building some rigs these days. Just saying it's not something I'm going to worry about.

I went out and looked at mine. It is vented outside which I think makes a big difference. I pulled the grease screens for the exhaust fan and with a flashlight looked up in the back of the mw/cv and there appears to be about a 1" space between the wall and the cooking chamber (or whatever it is called). When the cv heats up it automatically turns the exhaust fan on which pulls air through the grease screens up through the 1" space and then out the exhaust vent. So, on Montana's that have an outside vent, I don't think there is a problem. And as DQDick said, there may not be a problem at all. BUT, some folks with the SOB have had a problem. Maybe its unique to that brand, but maybe not. Something to keep an eye on if you start getting unusual smells while using the cv.

The only thing is the flapper on the outside vent has tabs on either side.
The tabs are not “automatic “ so the flap will remain closed allowing heat buildup.
I’ve also noticed if the flap is left loose a driving rain can cause a leak between the CV oven and wall.

Have replaced M/Ws on our last two Montana units. Found no damage when removing.

I guess new ones are different from our 2007. Our microwave/convection oven has a metal duct from the back up over the top to the front edge. Vents all that hot air out thru the front panel.

Is it against the forum rules? I don't recall seeing other brands mentioned by name. I started to name the company and add the link, but didn't want to get banned from our forum.

Not sure, but I think it was an issue with the old owner of the forum.

Hmm, interesting, I haven't notice a vent on the back of our rig 3700LK like we had in our travel trailers and what I've seen on other rigs. We do have a stove vent that I'm assuming it's through the roof. I'll have to see when we get it back from the dealer

If you have a RV frig that's not in a slide that's what the roof vent is for. The convection oven should vent right behind it, unless it's something new I haven't seen.

I have the RV Fridge, in the rear, there is no vent behind the convention oven on the side it's located at in the kitchen.
I just looked at all the pics I have of our rig and no vents on the side and the back only has the vents for the fridge. The convection/microwave oven is next to the window, in this pic, from the outside, it's above the little black door. No vent. . . .

My unit has the vent for the microwave convection oven/ vent hood over the stove - but the flap does not have lock tabs on it.

High Pointe Microwave melted backsplash
We have a 2017 3661RL, and the High Pointe microwave/convection oven came standard. Due to inexperience with convection we only used the microwave part the first 6 months. Once we started using the convection, we got a bad odor. We were told by Keystone that it was manufacturing oils, etc. burning off. While the warranty was still in effect, we had the microwave replaced. The new unit in convection mode became hot enough to burn skin and then shut itself down, and still had the odor issue. Keystone offered to replace it again, but we did not have any faith that would fix the problem. We had an independent mobile repair take a look, and when they pulled the unit, the backsplash was melted and charred on the upper left side. The mobile repair went through the microwave with test equipment and determined that it was working as built. They trimmed the backsplash to below where it was melting and reinstalled. Did not fix it. I bought a Whirlpool unit and had it installed. That fixed the issue. To their credit, Keystone reimbursed me for three mobile repair visits and the cost of the new microwave.

If take out your step ladder and look under outside hood of vent you will find two little locking tabs.

When we purchased our unit the microwave was unusable because it was venting out the front top. Microwaves are built like this so they can be used without an outside vent. We had an outside vent on the unit but nothing was coming out of it. Removed the microwave and reoriented the exhaust fan out the vent instead of out the front and now works as it should.

Good information, after reading this thread I went out and looked the vent on our 3791rd and the tabs were over the vent, preventing exhaust. They have been moved to allow movement.

On our 3701LK There is no outside vent for the convection/MW. As for that nice vent hood over the stove. It is nothing more than a light fixture. Thew vent fan does not exhaust to the outside. The ceiling fan in the kitchen is considered the vent fan. I think the issue with the convection oven depends on the amount of use the convection oven gets.

The fan below the microwave is a stove cooking vent it is not for the microwave, if your stove and microwave are in a slide it vents out the side if not in slide it vents out the roof.

SOB says as there have been no combustible events there is no reason for a recall, Yet. So lets wait for someone to burn to death then if we feel like it we`ll do it then. Makes prefect sense to me cause the bean counters say paying the lawsuit is cheaper than the recall. Then it`s out of warranty no issue for us anymore.
Anyway I`ve met several people that have complained about the odors in the camper when cooking or smoke going off. Said did you open the vent? "where`s that". Yep you have to turn the little tabs on the cover to open the vent simply amazing what people don`t know. But you have to close the little tabs when you are going to travel so the vent cover does not beat it self to death flapping at 65 MPH. Yes this will require a ladder or awning pull rod from another time when I had a bumper pull unit.
