Loose wiring connections......

have a tendency to overheat. While in Destin in May my wife plugged an electric skillet into the ground fault breaker on the side of the counter in the center of the room in our 3295RK. It kicked the breaker and I smelled a strange burnt smell. I unplugged the electric skillet and reset the breaker and she finished cooking breakfast on the stove. I continued to smell the odor all day and it was coming from the ground fault breaker. I went to Home Depot the next morning and brought a new breaker. After cutting off the power and removing the screws that held the faceplate and breaker in place, I checked the connections. I found the screws that fasten the wires down were loose. The insulation was melted back about 1/2 inch on the wire which was the most loose. I cut it back a little and stripped back the bad insulation and installed the new breaker and made sure all the connections were very tight. The interesting thing I have found is that breaker feeds more things than you might expect. It feeds all the receptacles in the kitchen, the 110 light between the fridge and stove, as well as the fridge. I also pulled the ground fault breaker in the bedroom beside the sink and found those connections to be just a little loose. It would probably be a good idea to check these screws in these receptacles once a year or so as many electrical fires are caised by loose connections.

I see this as a quality problem in both materials and workmanship. I saw it in my previous job with material from big brand name manufactures. Workmanship is an individual issue over seen by the QC dept. of the manufacture. JMO

I don't think you can find a GFCI receptacle that is not imported from China. I had one with loose connections that started to melt; was gonna replace with one made in USA. I couldn't find one. I wonder sometimes if RV manufacturers actually even have a QC department. I worked as a Maintenance Supv. for Belden Wire & Cable for a few years. If our QC found bad products being produced, it was shut down, and the product scrapped. Perhaps the RV standards are just too lax.

When we first got our 08 BigSky I had been on the forum for about four months. Because of the forum and the information I had acquired in those four months the first thing I did after the PDI and bringing it home was to pull all the breakers and tighten the screws on the breakers, neutral and ground. Most were tight but I found three that were loose and one very loose. Other than that problem and a few plumbing fixtures that were a bit loose most stuff in the rig was OK. This forum has given me many heads up notices on preventing problems. Some at very timely moments, as with the loose U-bolt problem. Some just good common sense ideas. So if you have a good idea please mention it here because we can all benefit from good ideas... Dave
